I know this might be a bit morbid. But can you get insurance to fly you home to the UK if you die. Sorry to start a depressing thread but it’s been on my mind. Probably because I am a nurse and deal with death on a daily basses.

Nope not morbid, it's gonna happen to us all.

Repatriation costs maybe covered in some travel insurances but I've not found anything that covers it in any other insurance..........yet.

Much cheaper to have a crem here and then 'fly back' in someone's baggage.

Although OH's gonna be stuck because I need to be buried, but that'll be his problem. :D

Don’t know if this is my mad humour, but with this hand luggage problem and having to taste liquids extra being taken in hand luggage could be a bit of a problem!!!! :D

I've got to ask.. why would someone "need" to be buried  (I've wracked my brain, honest!)

After reading one of the blogs on here (story re little blue box marked "Necropolis" with a persons name on it washed up on beach / "can we keep him Dad" from kids) I'm not sure I fancy being crem'd in case they too forget to scatter them and just dump the box in the sea!! :laugh

I remember a tv show where they cremated the grandmother and forgot to remove her pacemaker. Result - one big explosion. Not sure how true that is though, it was fiction.

EDIT: True apparently! According to this study (http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1279940) about half of the crematoria in the UK have had at least one such explosion!

Given this some thought and while there might be specific cover available, one way would simply be to earmark funds from a general life insurance policy to be used towards your funeral costs. There are funeral cover policies out there but I don't think they cover costs of repatriation if you die anywhere where your family isn't.

The best thing to do is to speak to an independent financial advisor who will be able to look at your particular circumstances, probably once you get there although you might want to speak to one over here.

That is scary about the exploding pacemakers, not something you would generally think about is it?

Well they run off a battery and you're not meant to throw batteries into a fire so it does make sense.

I've remembered the tv programme I saw it on too. It was the tv adaptation of the Crow Road (http://www.iainbanks.net/f06.htm) by Iain Banks. Well worth a read if you haven't already done so.
