No - number the boxes and compile an overall list for all boxes - don't be too detailed either :) It's from that list that MAF decide if an inspection is needed!

Good luck with your packing Auskiwi . You helped me with posting my first thread re accommodation in Nelson.
We are just about to start packing too and I was going to post a new thread asking if anyone has any tips on packing linen and clothes. All drawers will be full, but we still have lots of linen like duvets, blankets, sheets etc from the wardrobes and curtains. I would be a bit nervous about putting linen into a plain old cardboard carton incase it got damp, mouldy and stained (or all of the above) due to condensation in the container.
The removalists here in France are going to pack all our breakables for us and they have said they won't need our packing material. We found this out after we'd bought a 150m roll of bubble wrap!!
So does anyone have any tips for packing linen and clothes that we don't have suitcases for? Removers said they have special hanging boxes for the hanging stuff so perhaps i'll put all I can onto hangers!

Blakie,
I don't know if they have these in France, but I used Ziploc XXL bags (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290009230026) to pack clothes and linens, and then put the bags inside cartons.
Good luck to all of you who are packing now. I'm still traumatized from our move and the mere thought of packing makes me shudder...

Thanks for the good wishes everyone...so overwhelmed with all I have to do. Great tip re: XXL bags-hadn't thought of that. Seems I'm packing some stuff we really should be leaving behind (ie: all the kids toys! aargh!). At this rate I just might be relieved if the boat carrying our container hits an iceburg in the middle of the pacific :uhoh
Amy.

Jo and Jeff thanks you're star. I'm ure I can get something like that here somewhere - even ifs it in the form of large ziplock freezer bags.
I also have some large plastic storage boxes with lids - has anyone ever used those for packing anything? How did they perform?
Our leaving date is rushing headlong to meet us and I know I can do it but have just been putting it off and putting it off - was feeling totally overwhelmed.
Today I am adopting the 'worst first' approach and will start with packing up our office. I feel that if I can feng shui the office then my head will clear and everything will just fall into place (or boxes).
Auskiwi - don't say that!! (re iceberg). I've have the heebeegeebees about something like that happening. Wouldn't be worried about losing furniture, big stuff etc, its the photos, wedding album and sentimental stuff that it would be hard to lose - you know the stuff we never use on a day to day basis!
Happy wrapping! :)

Yep we used about 20 of those, mostly clear plastic one. So I made a list of the contents and taped that to the inside facing outwards and then the shippers taped the boxes and wrapped them and wrote 'not to be unpacked' on the outside.
The contents were things that were not going to be needed straightaway on arrival, so it saved them unpacking them all while I wasn't looking.

Thanks so much for the excellent tip re the plastic boxes and a contents list - will do that. If I buy any more plastic boxes I will try and get ones with a clear like not a solid colour one.

Hi Blakie
Make sure you try and get decent quality plastic crates as I have seen quite a lot of them break especially the lids. Your removal company maybe could wrap them for you as well?
On the inventory lists just make sure you have a list that corresponds with numbers on your items for ease of location and checking off. Lists do not have to be super detailed but can really assist in finding items of MAF interest.
