Hi all,
I’m new to this great forum. Please what exactly is this EOI verification and preliminary check? What exactly are they trying to verifying that's taking them for ever to do.

welcome to the forums
the initial verificiation is just a basic check to make sure you've filled the form out right and that the points you've claimed "make sense" eg if you've claimed points for skills shortage then the job title you've given is in a skills shortage area.
the reason it can take a while is not how long it takes them to do it but how many of them they have to do - you are no doubt working your way up a big pile.
you don't say where you are from - the waiting times in different countries can be very different.
hope that ITA arrives for you soon

Dear Trigirl:
thank you for your reply. I'm in the south island and the Dunedin branch is processing my application. So I was thinking it should not take too long since I'm already in NZ. Besides, I have a job offer. Do you recommend that I apply for a work permit pending the processing of my EOI. thanks alot.

Sorry can't help with that as I don't know how long the NZ branches take
no doubt someone with experience of applying from inside NZ will be along soon to help.

Our personal experience (12 months ago now mind) was that processing the application was quicker in the UK than in New Zealand. So once I’d a job offer in hand I went back to London and got a work permit (quickly, took 20 minutes & it helped secure that job) then applied for PR once here on the basis I already had a job.

I would - my work permits took only a couple of days to process. Applying for PR was much longer and drawn out. If you have a job offer just complete the 1015 work permit form, and get your employer to complete supplementary form 1113.
Once these are submitted and approved you can work, and continue to process your PR application.
Oh yeah, and my EOI took 3 days, from being sent from Wellington to the Auckland office for checking. I had my ITA the next day. My case officer said this was because it was easier to check than most as I already had work permits in place for my employment.
