We intend to purchase a brand new Toyota Prius. We are cash buyers. What could we expect to negotiate with Toyota from our position?

The car costs around $43500. What happened was, the Toyota agent (whom we think is a loser), told us they could not lower their price. What they could do was to give us some useless "freebies" (that we don't need), which amounts to about $1350. We thought that was pathetic.

On top of that, he took a d*rn long time "telling" us all these info. Took him 10 min to write out the "long" list of 3 freebies on the quotation, which he could have told us in words in 3 seconds. We tried to "interrupt" him halfway while writing, but he was in his own world. Why he didn't prepare that "quotation" in advance, we could never fathom. He had half a day to prepare before our appointment! We have other queries on costs of other add-ons, but he didn't have the answer to any of them. He even wasted another 10min of our time calling someone else to give him a quote, which he ultimately could not obtain  A 5min meeting ended up taking an hour, and at the end of it, my young son (2-years-old) became so cranky and unmanageable (there were no children's play area), that he fell off the a step and injured his foot. There is a chance he might have fractured a bone, we will have to wait for tomorrow to see how it goes :(

What would you do? Stick with him? Demand for another agent? Go to another Toyota dealer in another part of town? Or??

Right, leave him in his own world and visit another dealer;

Few weeks i emailed (from Holland) two car dealers in NZ,
with the request to give me a quote for a new car, i did my homework
and gave them the type, color and extra options on a plate...

In the end the dealer (in Auckland) who responded to my email
(few days later) got the deal and after few emails back etc. we reached
an agreement and i bought the car, remitted deposit of 10pct and he
emailed me 2 weeks later a few pics of the car, which was just delivered
at his business. Thats the way it should be, from the other dealer
never got a reply back...... he probably thought damn another immigrant
wasting my time with only questions .... :yes

Never bought a new car via 5 emails and 1 fax-message before ,
never talked to the guy :laugh

Snuugleball.

I'm sure you've realised the answer just by writing your post. ;)

I know what I'd be doing and it wouldn't involve talking to him ever again. There's more choice out there, ask for help if you're that stuck. :D

ah ok thought you meant the one in town.

Why stick with toyota. Try wholesale cars direct.

They are not on commision and although I've not bought from them yet, I've heard good reports.

Tried WCD, but thought they only sell used cars? We wanted a brand new car. WCD was very good, though after buying a used car from them, we found that we could get a similar one cheaper through private sales. However, we had the peace of mind knowing that it was in a reasonably good driving condition.

Used and nearly new, I think.

TBH I'm struggling thinking of spending $43,000 on a new car. :D

$43k's a lot of cash, so I would just go elsewhere - there are plenty of local Toyota dealers (City, Upper Hutt, Porirua etc), and ones further away will deliver to Wellington (I just bought a new motorbike from Palmerston North as it was cheaper, even though I'm in Welly too).

I have a contact at a Toyota dealer in Chch if you want me to help see what you can get one for?

I'm also having trouble, like Smiler, wondering why you would want to spend that much money on a car :D

Any how, I'd walk away from that dealer, he's obviously not a clue. Can't help you on where to go though as we've only used second hand car dealers. Wholesale Cars Direct are okay but we didn't like the sales guy and the Delica we were looking at was in awful conditon for the money.

Walk away, his loss.Get quotes from lots of other dealers. You want at least %10 off and the extras.Go hard and don't compromise.I just got $20 and two $15 pairs of socks and a chilly bag thrown in and I was only buying 2 pairs of Gum Boots the guy actually said "Merry Christmas" as I was leaving.

There's no way you will get 10% on an NZ new Prius - they simply don't sell enough of them for that kind of discounting, and it is a VERY specialist/niche model here - would be different if you were looking at Corolla or a Camry though!

I reckon 3-5% at a real push, but we'll see!

Did you find somewhere else to buy from or did you stick with this guy? :D

For that kind of cash - not only would I expect gold star service - (im thinking tea, coffee, sandwiches - cuddly toy for child and someone who knows what they are talking about) but id also expect a very big bow on top of the car :D

on a serious note - if its a prius you want (and im on the right track thinking its a hybrid car - ignore me if im not) - then check out:

They are based in Auckland - but it will be worth your at least talking to them I imagine.
