We were just trying to purchase a fridge and a few small electrical appliances, which amounts to over $2k. However, "for security reasons", the store could not accept credit card (mastercard) payment for more than $2k (I think). We had to scramble every single cent we've got from EFTPOS and cash to pay for everything (didn't open an nz account with a cheque book). What made it worse was that we have already withdrawn a certain amount from our EFTPOS that morning for another purchase, so we have also "hit the daily withdrawal limit" there.

Isn't that bizzarre? Or were we just plain unlucky?

The store was Noel Leeming, and the bank was Kiwibank. Not that it matters.

On the same note, dh's company also encountered problems using company credit cards to pay for purchases over a certain amount (around $2k, I think).

From that day on, we try to spread our major purchases over several days instead of having one "big shopping day". Can be difficult at times when we are still trying to settle down. So many purchases needed.

Are we the only ones encountering this max limit of $2k for credit card usage??

Sometimes the stores set a limit on credit card purchases - although 2k does sound low for somewhere like Noel Leeming. What if you wanted to buy a huge fridge there?
I know for sure that neither my BNZ (visa) or Westpac (mastercard) have a 2k limit on them. I've exceeded this only recently on both of them when buying furniture. If you contact Kiwibank they may extend the limit for you?
