I'm looking to buy a Toyota Hilux within the next week or so and have a couple of queries that I would be most grateful if anyone can provide any information: -
1. There seems to be quite a few around and hold their value reasonably well, is this a fair assumption.
2. I'm thinking of a diesel engine - various threads suggest that it's more economical, again is this a fair assumption.
3. Salesman indicated that a service would be required every 7,500km (15,000km for petrol) - is this correct? I would work this out at being 5 to 6 services a year, can that be right? If true is this for all vehicles or specifically a Ute?
Any help will be most appreciated & thanks in advance.
David.

Also there is some sort of extra "diesel tax" on these. I don't remeber the details but the amount struck as being extortionate. I'll check with my friend that has one and get more info.

Haven't a clue, what colour is it? :p
This info might help, especially check out the road user charges. This will show you the amount you will have to pay for 'diesel miles' http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/vehicle-ownership/buying.html
Also, could you not ask a a local garage ie (someone who would do your servicing) what they would recommend. I mean someone other than the dealer selling it to you, of course. ;)
Hmm so far two ladies have replied. :laugh

It was stated in a recent article , they compaired petrol with diesel drive, and even though you have to buy diesel milage, the diesel is less expensive on the liter to buy;
final outcome was that despite you have to buy diesel k.m. , driving one
is still on average 25% less expensive then a petrol vehicle.

It's a sort of shiny blue that caught my eye immediately, you can see it here (http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g270/davidianforsyth/02-09-06_1436a.jpg)

Hi,
I don't think anyone has answered your question about the servicing - my OH bought a Diesel Nissan Terrano & he had to have loads of services - about 4 or 5 a year but only to satisfy the warranty package - if you're buying without a warranty I think you can get it serviced as often as you like - so long as it passes WOF (Warrant of Fitness). In the end he didn't bother with the warranty & just gets it serviced when he needs to.
Enjoy!

Yes, most Utes seem to have quite good residuals here - although you'll obviously lose something on such a new vehicle.
2. I'm thinking of a diesel engine - various threads suggest that it's more economical, again is this a fair assumption.
Yes, it will work out cheaper, especially if you do more k's, although the diesel surcharge eats some of the savings.

Sounds about right for a commercial diesel - just ring up another Toyota dealer and check. You need to stick with them for the warranty.

Many thanks for the replies, wife has put a deposit down on it today:raebanana
As for the cost - we got 20% knocked off the list price and with a strong pound it works out to be the same price as what I paid for a three year old MGF I bought seven years ago :nice1

Thought this site might help to see how your car/truck rates for fuel consumption etc
