Hi, this is my first post on this forum so sorry if this has been discussed in previous threads. I have a job offer in auckland as a Speech and Language Therapist (currently in UK) and am going through the process of visa application etc. Hope to be in NZ before Christmas!
My partner is a UK trained teacher - Secondary Art (he is just about to complete his NQT year). We have been looking at what he needs to do to be able to teach in NZ as he can get a work visa based on my job offer (e.g. get his qualifications assessed - NZQA). We have also looked into teacher registration but it is a bit confusing.
Does anyone know if he can get teacher registration in NZ with just one year UK teaching experience? Does this mean he will not receive full registration and if so what implications does this have (salary etc)?
Many thanks for any advice. We are on a bit of a tight schedule to get things sorted so any help gratefully received!

The first thing you need to do is sent your qualifications off to NZQA to be assessed. They will give you a level. Once this comes back you can then send of to get provisional teacher registration by filling in the form at the link below.
This lasts 3 years and then you apply for full registration. NZ credit overseas teacher with 1/2 the years you have been teaching (I have been led to believe).

Use a TC1 if you are you are an overseas teacher seeking registration and a practising certificate for the first time in New Zealand. Fee $120.00.
I can't see a problem as long as he has QTS in the UK. The process of getting the qualifications assessed and then registered is quite long (can take months rather than weeks!) so I would start the ball rolling as soon as possible. If you have any other questions please feel free to PM me. :nice1

Pootle, just had another thought. To save time I am sure you can ask NZQA to send the results of your assessment straight to Teaching Council for registration. Then send your registration application without the assessment. If you're in a hurry this may speed things up a little? :nice1

Hi Pootle
Congrats on your job offer. As far as i know your OH will be ok to work after his NQT year, but it my be an idea to ask a NZ teaching agency such as education personel based in Wellington for more info, I went to a seminar of theirs and they were very helpful.
The NZQA varification is the first step - make sure you fill out the form and follow the notes very carefully - mistakes can cause hideous delays. I prepared my application with great attention to detail ( very unlike me!) but had heard lots of stories about it taking months to come back and like you we are on a short timescale due to OH having secured a one year career break starting this sep. Anyway they received my app. on June 14th and I got my report on Aug. 31. I did have to pester them quite a bit during the last few weeks.
They do send a copy to the teachers council, and you need to send the form and a police certificate from uk to get registerd. The "enhanced disclosure" certificate that all uk teachers have here to teach in school is not enough. You have to provide a "subject access" report which comes from ploice HQ (you can get the no. from your local Police. This takes 40 days to come back! I am expecting mine any day now.
hope this helps
Sue.

They seemed to do that with my husband's application without being asked, so perhaps they do that as standard now. But ask anyway.

One other thing to be aware of is that the Teachers Council only meet once every 6 weeks to consider applications for registration - if you get in the pile just after a meeting you willhave to wait until the next one (this caught us out). Also I am under the impressoin that all overseas trained teachers only get provisional status when they first register with NZTC - Mr Rr had 4 years experience and full QTS in Scotland when he came here, but was still only provisionally registered. I don't think it affects the salaries though - that is dependent on qualifications, age and teaching experience.

You are correct that registration status (provisional or full) doesn't affect your salary - your salary is strictly related to your quals and experience.
