Has anyone on here worked in TV in NZ? I work for the BBC in the UK and was hoping to pick up a few contracts in NZ.
Cheers

Hi Dan,
Please check out my other posts for more information, but I will give a brief response here. (don't want to bore you too much!) :)
I moved here 3 months ago from NYC. I worked the last 8 plus years at Discovery Channel (in development and show production) and before that, the BBC in London.
I have had absolutely NO luck here in TV. I have applied for every job under the sun, and cold emailed my resume to most of the production houses here. I barely get responses, much less interviews. Or, I'll get responses about how they aren't hiring, but would like to meet for coffee, and when I email to set up a time for coffee - I never hear back again. Happens ALOT.
Anyway...if you can, try to secure a position before you come down - or be ready to try something else to pay the bills. Right now I'm temping. And to keep my resume up-to-date I am producing a tv show for free. Yep - free. But it's what I love, so I do it anyway.
Good luck to you - I wish you all the best! And if you do decide to come to NZ - drop me a PM. we can get together for drinks & I can give all any contacts I have.
All the best,
Leigh

Leigh - Ulp. Not the response I was expecting. I have a few contacts over here who thought I would be OK in NZ. I'm a self shooting PD and thought that might get me somewere. It's all very closed shop all over the world I guess.
I will drop you a line when I arrive and I will have a trawl for your other posts.
Thanks

Hi Dan,
I would be more than happy to give you all the contact info I have! You never know - maybe there is something on your CV that is needed here, that my CV is lacking. So you will hopefully have better luck than me! :)
You could always use the lack of jobs as an excuse to start your own freelance business? If you need an employee, I'll send you my CV! :laugh
Seriously, though, just let me know what you need & I'll do what I can. As sad as it sounds, I'm just happy to be working in production - even if it's for free. Once I realized I probably wasn't going to get a paying job, I started to worry that I was going to have a major gap in my CV. But now when I get back to the states in 2007, and look for a paying job in tv, I won't have to explain why my last tv job was in the middle of 2006.
But will all that being said, I still apply for every NZ paying TV job that's posted. The eternal optimist....
Keep in touch!
Leigh
