We are thinking of buying a new TV before we head out to NZ (one of those TFS jobs that come HD ready). Is this wise as I know electrical goods are more expensive in NZ or should we wait

Buy it there!!
You'll be looking at about £8-900 for a 32-36 inch HD LCD that's a reasonable brand, the same screen would be about $4000 here - I'm so glad we bought one just before we came over (although it's still on the boat at the minute)

Am I safe in assuming a new TV from the U.S would work OK in NZ too?

Probably not check instruction manual.
NZ mains supply 230-240v 50Hz. USA 115v 60Hz
NZ transmission standard PAL (4.43) Sound 5.5 Mhz (system B)
USA transmission standard NTSC (3.57) sound 4.5 Mhz (system M)
So unless you have a multistandard TV it will not work and could be damaged if plugged into a 240V outlet. (Device gets 4 times required power)
All US mains equipment designed to work on 115v would need a step down transformer before connecting to NZ mains.

Thanks for that, Nightfever. How would I know if it was a multistandard TV?
Amy.
