I like to do a little (read very little) gardening and a few years ago had a productive vegetable plot and gorgeous hanging baskets. Would like to pick this up again in NZ (youngest child that bit older now) and here in the UK relied on the "expert" series of books for their brilliant lay out and detailed planting etc times. Obviously be useless in NZ, anyone know of similar printed in (for) NZ?

I'm thinking of Christmas lists ;)

I successfully grew cherry tomatos on our fire escape one year. They were delicious and I was quite proud of my green thumb. I'm going to watch this thread and see what books are recommended. Can't wait to have a real garden.

Try the Yates Garden Guide - NZ gardening reference for years. I just bought a copy and it looks pretty good :nice1 .

I bought the "Gardening in New Zealand Month by Month" book by Dennis Greville and use that to reference back to the UK ones. It's really handy to get you used to the swing in seasons here :nice1 .

Plus, ask your new neighbours what goes in where and when - good ice breaker!

The NZ Herald has a gardening section with a "What to do this week" article. It covers everything from pruning roses to planting onions, and I've found it really helpful (to the extent that I cut them out and stick them in a book). I'm sure the other papers (ODT, Dom Post etc) probably do the same.

There are a couple of good online resources such as:
www.bestgardening.com

I also have a neighbour who is a mad keen gardener, so I've gained lots of knowledge (and cuttings) from her, which has been the best help.

I would neve have imagined 5 years ago that I would be interested in gardening and growing my own fruit and veg, but I love it!

Please tell me I didn't buy the wrong book. It cost me a pretty penny to have it shipped. I just got it today and it says that it's the most amazing gardening guide ever!
For Australia.

:roll

Did I get the wrong one? There is zero specific information inside about NZ.

Which book did you get? Was it Yates? Australia is very different climatically to NZ and has very different native flora, so the info may be a little inaccurate.

Crap. Yes, it's the Yates. I guess I didn't check the description carefully enough.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

There is no way that they're going to take it back. Maybe I can find someone around here who is moving to Australia ...

go into one of the second hand bookshops and have a look around, theres usually quite a few gardening books there, take the time to check where it was published though

Unfortunately, I'm still in Canada! There aren't a lot of books about gardening in AustralAsia in the hobby section.

Wait until you get here & buy the Yates NZ from the Warehouse - that's the cheapest place I've seen it - much cheaper than anywhere else...

I want to use it as an enticement for my lady before we go! If I can get her to invest some ideas in what she might be able to grow when we get there (as well as what to expect for pests, etc.), it would go a long way toward convincing her.

Of course, it would help if I had some idea of where we might be moving and if we'd be owning a house and so on.:roll
