Hello Everyone

My wife and I have done quite a bit of research on the internet regarding job opportunities in our particular teaching areas. The government sites are very helpful in that regard. With that being said, we are interested in the opinions of people who are actually living there.

Here is a brief overview of our qualifications and experience.

John has taught for five years in Duluth, Minnesota, at the high school level. In the state of Minnesota, he is certified to teach all sciences at the middle school level, all life sciences at the high school level, all earth sciences at the high school level, and physics at the high school level. In 2001, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. In 2004, he completed the requirements to teach Physics in Minnesota at Bemidji State University in Minnesota. In 2005, he received a Master of Education degree in Teaching and Learning from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.

Nicole has taught for a total of six years in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. She is licensed to teach students with learning disabilities in both states. Her experience ranges from early elementary through high school. She currently teaches middle school students with learning disabilities in Superior, Wisconsin. In 2000, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. In 2005, she received her Master of Education degree in Teaching and Learning from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.

Assuming these are accepted by NZQA, what do you think about the likelihood of us finding jobs? We are particularly interested in the Christchurch area. Is this going to work for us?

You both have training and experience in teaching fields that are in high demand (high school science and Special Ed) so I think you wouldn't have a lot of trouble finding work.

I recently obtained my Masters degree (in Ed. Admin) from the University of South Dakota and NZQA gave me full recognition (my degree was recognized as the equivalent of a NZ Masters). About 5 years teaching experience and a Masters will put you on around $60k per year I believe (assuming you get assessed at Level 9 by NZQA).

The website below lists all current vacancies so you can check out what is available. Best of luck to you!

Thanks for your reply. It's nice to see that some people were successful with their NZQA. That has been a worry of mine ever since I started the process.

Anyway, we checked the postings and it certainly seems to look good considering that the school year isn't over in NZ yet. My wife and I really like Christchurch and we are hoping to find jobs in that area. What do people think about that, considering our qualifications?

I'm so excited about all of this, I can hardly stand it. Nicole and I would leave tomorrow...but those darn details!
