There is no social security number in NZ.
All you need to do is to register with Inland Revenue Department and you will be assigned with an IRD number so that when you open a NZ bank account, you will be paying a lower tax rate on your earned bank interest.
If you buy a house and you are taking up a mortgage, the bank will require you to have a building/fire insurance. You may also get content insurance to cover your household stuff.
If you buy a car, you may get a car insurance and then again, it is not compulsory to have a car insurance in NZ.
You may consider getting a medical and hospitalisation insurance for your family.
You could also consider income protection insurance (in the event of disability) and/or life insurance (if something happened to the sole breadwinner, the family do not need to sell the house as the sum assured will pay off the mortgage. This will protect the family from losing their home).

You can apply for an IRD number before you arrive in NZ.
Here is the link.

We are in the UK and it took around 10 days for ours to arrive.
Hope that helps.

No, it doesn't I'm afraid.
If you have a standard or agreed value policy you can make a claim on your insurance policy to have your vehicle repaired. If the other party is identified, and is clearly at fault your insurance company will pay your excess and let you keep your no claims bonus.
If you have third party cover or if you are not insured, and you are able to prove that the other person caused the accident, you could make a claim in the Disputes Tribunal, against that person, to recover the costs of repairing your vehicle. However if the person who caused the accident has no insurance, it is possible that they will not be able to afford the costs of repairing your vehicle.
That is what I found out when someone who is uninsured drove into the back of my car (when at a red light).
Any damages to the person are dealt with through ACC.
