I’ve been lurking on the website for a while and I guess it’s time to make an introduction. I’m a computer engineer from the States living in Seoul with my Korean wife. We are looking to get out of Asia probably next year and are seriously considering NZ. I actually had an EOI accepted a few years ago and was selected but I did not have a chance to complete the process (hopefully I won’t be penalized for this).

I’m 35 and have a bachelor degree in Computer Science and a MBA with about 10 years in IT. We plan to try to come over on a skilled migrant visa. We will probably look at Auckland as that seems to be the center of the IT industry.

Right now my wife is in treatment for cervical cancer. Hopefully we will be through this by early next year, so I plan to be ready to move then. Life is too short to stay in Seoul; I need some trees, air and a little space of my own. We’ll vacation in NZ soon to see how we like at as neither of us has been there.

I have a few questions which have no doubt been asked many times before, please excuse my redundancy.

1) Does anyone think a woman who has been cured of cervical cancer would fail the medical?
2) When should we apply if she would need to take the medical around the March time frame?
3) For those of you there, I will probably need high speed internet which reaches the States. I’ve noticed that many plans cap out at 10gig / month which is pretty low for me. Does anyone who is a heavy international internet user have any opinions of speed and cost of use to reach non-NZ sites?

Thanks all, I look forward to participating in the forums.

Hi JZ

Welcome to the forum :D

Just a quickie re your wife - I had a colposcopy 1 year before moving to NZ after a Grade III abnormal smear, and was given the all clear just a couple of months before my NZ medical. It was no problem for me at all and it was all declared on my medical. I was given my 6mthly check ups here no probs or questions asked too.

Hope that helps put your mind at rest a little.

Good luck

Moorf,

That's great to know. Thanks! I think we'll submit the EOI as soon as she's coming off the chemo.

I have this vision in my head of getting some lifestyle property after we get there to give her some room for a nice garden and a view. Maybe we'll live in Auckland and have some weekend property.

Hi JZ - welcome to the forum.

I can't give you any actual facts and figures (but will find out for you) - but regarding internet access.

We have to have good broadband access because of my husbands work, he needs to have fast, reliable connections between NZ, UK, Africa and the USA.

I will find out exact costs for you but we pay just that little bit more (we're with Xtra) and we get VERY fast connection. We are capped but (as yet) we've never exceeded our quota.

Don't suppose this has been much help without actual costs etc, but at least it shows you that high speed connection is available - at a cost.

Hope all goes well with your wife's illness and that you are able to get here soon.

Diny,

Thanks for the reply. If you don't mind me asking, what type of work does your husband do?

I don't mind you asking at all. He works for an oil company. At the moment he's on an oil rig off the west coast of Africa.
