Just been to travel agents this morning... thought will be straight forward to book our flight out
:wah With 7months old baby and 3 years old, i am taking pushchair, two car seats and travel cot, and found out that car seats and travel cot will be part of baggage allowance  so even on the top of it there is no extra baggage allowance for emigrating by airline i was going to use, Emirates from birmingham...
Any advice??!! or advice any other airline (rather not to fly out from London) we can use that accept car seats and travel cot with extra allowance?!
Thanks!

Are you buying seats for both children and going to use the car seats on the plane? Crazy question but what kind of car seats are they?

Already got three car seat, but taking two of them as my daughter is 7 months old and my son is 3 years, so we will put them with luggages not in the cabin as children will be without car seats to get around in the car if i put in shipping container for up to 8 weeks. Is that any help?

I don’t know anything about car seats etc but singapore airlines fly from manchester and do give an enhanced luggage allowance if you are emigrating. So that may be an option worth investigating?

I think what Emily was getting at is, if your kids have their own seats on the plane, then you can (probably) take the car seats into the cabin for them to use on the plane, and the car seats will count as cabin baggage, not as checked baggage.

Hi,
we are flying with Air NZ and are taking one car seat on board for our 2 year old to sit on - as she has a child's ticket (too old to be classed as an infant) she can have this as cabin luggage and it doesn't affect her luggabge allowance. However this airline's allowance per person is only 46 k which I think may be smaller than others. Hope this helps,
tracey

Yes, exactly. And if you use the car seats on the plane, then you can gate check the stroller which should not count as luggage, unless Emirates is different. I know it's a lot to lug up to the gate but worth it if it protects your baggage allowance.

We have the Britax Marathon and use the GoGoBabyz attachment which allows you to stroll the car seat through the airport. Loved it! We strapped the kids into their car seats and moved them about while we shoulder carried their umbrella strollers. Went up to the gate, gate checked the strollers and then carred the car seats into the cabin and strapped them in. Greg swears you can do this with the GoGoBabyz still attached but I took it off. Here's the link if it helps: http://www.gogobabyz.com/products/gogo_kids.html. See if your car seat is listed.

Have you spoken to Emirates direct, rather that the agent? Might be worth a call. :D

Air NZ has the biggest baggage allowance and is worth thinking about if you fly to Auckland direct. bit of a hassle if you fly to Chch. It might be worth doing a forum search on this as it has been covered several times before.

No matter which airline you fly with it's always worth calling them direct. The agent doesn't always have the authority to grant extra luggage allowance but if you speak to the airline direct, explain that you are emigrating you often get granted extra.

It's worth a phone call. Good luck.

Thanks for advice, i will contact emirates direct. For gogobabyz, i love it but sadly our car seats doesn't fit as we got britax renenissance, Jane's matrix and bebe confort's hipsos rouge 2006. I will also find out the bebe confort will fit the plane seat whereas jane's will go in hold as my daughter will be on my lap then using bassinet during flight.

Is there any other way of getting spare travel cot or cot for my daughter while awaiting for our shipping turn up with her cot, instead of bringing travel cot with me? ie rental etc? Thanks

We flew with Virgin. Turned up at the airport with 3 kids (4,2,1 at the time), 4 cases, 3 car seats, 1 pushchair, travel cot, 3 pieces of hand luggage.

Had no trouble once we told them we were emigrating with all the extra pieces.

It's worth contacting Plunket once you get here, I know they rent car seats and they may rent out travel cots.

nippa&pippa,
sorry meant to get back sooner but forgot password - oops.
I checked direct with air nz in August about baggage as we nearly got to Wellington.
If you book your ticket through to wellington, Christchurch etc at the same time you buy the flight from uk then the international allowance applies to the whole flight. Kinda obvious i suppose, but didn't want to find out too late that was not the case.

contact Emirates, They actually rang me when I booked my boys tickets...and asked it fhey were emigrating as the tickets were one way...I said yes, they requested I email a scanned copy (or fax if you have one) of their visas, and voila they were given 40kg...I didnt get any extra with Cathay Pacific...unless I paid an extra £399, so be aware that some airlines changed their rules regarding emigration allowances (have to buy a Migrant ticket which is more expensive!)

Unfortunatly 80KG still wasnt enough to bring my summer gear :-( so I still have a case in the UK!

Also the http://www.babyfactory.co.nz/hireage.html hire out stuff while you wait for your container, there are also Toy Librarys as well.

They are reasonably priced as my grandson is coming over in Jan and I am going to hire some stuff

good luck

Yep travelling light with little ones is not going to happen :( Have never had a problem though with extra / heavy items like pushchairs or travelcots on our visits to Oz and NZ prior to settling here.

However on our final visit before our migration we hired travelcot, carseats, highchair, backcarrier and even a cool leapfrog playtable from an excellent franchise company called www.babyonthemove.co.nz who have franchises all over the country. Found them very affordable and extremely friendly. They tend to be mums themselves earning some extra money through the franchise.

Arranged / booked all by e-mail before we came over, she dropped things off where we were staying at an agreed time. Highly recommend this service, also for visitors coming over for holidays to see you / us :)

Good luck with your preparations and do let me know if there's anything I can help with (our girls are 7 and nearly 4)

www.trademe.co.nz is a good place to get stuff, you can get new and old on there, but be a bit careful cos some of the second hand stuff gets silly bids, and you could have been better of buying new, just make sure you know what it would cost new, so you dont overbid.

Thought let you know update on stupid baggage allowance....Thought we have solved it and went to book the flight this morning, the bombshell dropped that they rang emirates to double-check and been confirmed that we don't have any extra cos it is for australia's emigratate..aaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhh.
Right soon i got home and i rang emirates again myself this time, and somehow we got extra, eh? so travel agents had spoken to different person, probably same person i spoken to on first call to emirates , so i explained what had happened, so she left a note on the computer that we ARE allow extra allowance and get travel agents to call her! So i am awaiting for a call from travel agents to confirm everything is ok now before we go ahead and book the flight this afternoon.....oh what next please?
