I was just wondering for those of you dealing with a police check from the States, what does the FBI police check look like? Has anyone submitted a record with any type of "incidents"?

I've decided to get my record before I even submit my EOI just to see if there is anything on it I need to clean up. I was never an angel growing up. :raebanana

Well based on my experience (while I was in the states), you need to go to police station and get finger printed and send those finger printed to FBI. You can actually call the FBI office and ask about the status...which funny thing about it is...people who works in FBI are much nicer than the local police men/women.

The FBI check is just a piece of paper with your finger printed.

Thanks for the replies. See, my brother was accused of a crime he didn't commit so I got caught robbing a bank so I could get into prison to break him out. I tattooed the blue prints of the prison on my body to help our escape. Now we are out and on the run. Do you think that will show up on my record?

Has anyone done this that was not Living in the Sates at the time?

Where did you get your prints made?

As far as I can see for the FBI site, they just need the finger prints (that is there seems to be no certification of the prints...)

http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cjisd/faqs.html

and they say you can use this card for the prints:

I was in the States when I had my done, sorry I can't answer that question, but I did notice the same thing, that there was no certification of the prints. I think the card template does require the signature of the person doing the fingerprinting and the agency they work for needs to be identified where indicated on the card.

A word of caution on fingerprints -- my first two requests for an ID Record were rejected because the FBI's machine couldn't read my prints. I can't imagine it could read the third set either since the inked impressions didn't change any between attempts, but I was told by our local police dept. that the FBI doesn't make you try more than three times. Maybe they have an alternate means of background check for those of us whose prints aren't usable. Anyway, getting my ID Record took much longer than expected since it was several weeks after each submission before I got notice of the rejection. When I finally got the Record I was amazed at how low-tech and un-official the document looked.

I hope all goes well with your application process --

We have two questions re- FBI Checks for NZ Immigration...

1. What is the cost for the FBI Check?
2. Is it true that it takes 8-10 weeks for the results of the FBI Check to be sent back to you?

Cheers,
Suzanne and Ron.

1. $18 each.
2. Yes and No.

It takes 12-14 weeks according to a telephone call I placed on Oct 4th, the day I sent in my paperwork asking how long it would take.

However I just received my FBI papers three days ago. I did two things to speed it up: wrote on the outside of the envelope it was urgent and needed it done by Nov 1st, AND I wrote both of my congressmen and asked them to speed it up WRT the Freedom Information Act.

Voila, 3 weeks!

Have a look at my thread on this topic.

ours took 3 months, but we weren't in a hurry.

The FBI does have alternative ways of doing background checks...they use name checks, alias checks, and others, but these take longer because there is a higher chance of multiple hits on their database, in which case they have to investigate each one to see if it is you.

Hi .. we needed FBI checks as we lived in the USA for 3 years .. we went to the local police station here in York, UK and they did the prints then and there .. (we did have to wait whilst they checked a shoplifter in!!!) and they were very efficient about it all.. then we just put them into a hard backed envelope .. wrote the date we wanted them done by on the outside and sent them off and they came back in less time than it took for the UK ones to be done!!!!
