My question is how did you find a place to live from overseas? I am wondering how (or if) I could arrange to find a place to live before I come over to NZ. If you have any information on how to do this, I would be very greatful.

In the days before the internet this would have been much harder.

You should search for some kind of temporary (one or two weeks) accommodation in the city you want to settle in. Search for "serviced apartments" or hotels/motels. It will be easy to make a reservation over the phone or by e-mail.

Then when you arrive you can search for a more permanent home through the usual channels.

I wouldn't think of arranging anything more than a couple of weeks, anything longer I wouldn't look at arranging until you get here

You could also look at holiday homes, which is what we did when we first came over. They are a little more expensive than motels though.

we booked a place in sumner, off the internet, if your off to Christchurch it was a good place to stop as it had everything you needed, close to the beach (no seaview though)

http://www.holidayhouses.co.nz/properties/5706.asp the owner told me that if any other emigratees wanted a short term lease..ie 4 wks then they could contact him to see if they could work something out...his names Craig.

good luck

Yes, we also booked a furnished house in Sumner through holiday houses web site, stayed there nearly three weeks and then found another rental through the adds in The Press. I wouldn`t commit myself for a longer rental if I haven`t seen it, but the holiday house was very nice. It gave us a chance to stay put for a while and not have to worry about furniture and daily life stuff (we didn`t bring much with us and it took the container nearly 8 weeks to reach Chch, because of the Christmas period).
Depending on when/ where you plan to move, you might want to start looking for a place right now. It is a load off your mind once you have sorted that out.
Cheers, Laura

Hi guys. I'm new at this site. My husband and I are planning to migrate to NZ so we're trying to get as much info as we can. We have three kids (9,7, and 2) and an upcoming little one in January. hopefully, if we get selected, our plan is for my husband to leave ahead of us. How much is the weekly rental for a single room and for a house with 2 rooms? We're not looking for a posh one, just a simple house that can accommodate my growing family.

I hope to get a reply from you guys. thanks!

Hi Tinjoemar.

Welcome to the forum. :cheers:cheers

Rental kinda depends on where you're heading and which area you live in. Whereabouts do you think you will be?

Have a look on www.trademe.co.nz This will give you a rough idea and there are also some agencies on the site too. :nice1
