We have a ridiculous collection of Christmas lights...has anyone tried bringing them from the U.S to NZ and using an adapter or something to get them to work? If not, it is off to Goodwill they go... :(

With a stepdown converter just about anything from the US will work here. Christmal lites are no problem, just bring some spare bulbs. The only expection are some items with motors that need to run at certain speed such as a washing machine or a fridge. Buy the converters in the US they are MUCH cheaper there.

Thanks for the info Chris. Would you mind giving me more info about the step down convertors as I have visions of the guys at Radio Shack looking at me cross-eyed when I ask for such a thing!??? Thank you!
Amy.

You can buy them online, that is probably the best place here is where I got mine from: http://www.dvdoverseas.com/store/index.html?loadfile=catalog1_0.html
you want to buy double the watts a device is rated for, if you are running multiple devices off one converter doube the total of all devices. Also, when you buy them they come with a UK or Europe plug adapater so you will need to buy some converters, much cheaper online in the US than in NZ so buy them before you go. These cost MUCH more in NZ so buy what you need before you come, you can sell on trademe for a considerable profit if you have extras.

Thanks for that link. Looks like I need to load up on those converters and plug adapters.
Slight complication: those of us migrating are allowed to bring our personal furnishings without paying VAT. However, this rule specifically does not apply to voltage-conversion devices, which are subject to VAT. (They aren't prior belongings, they are devices purchased specifically so prior belongings will work in NZ.) So you might get a tax bill buying ahead, though apparently not enough to offset your savings.

We brought several over in our container and didn't get taxed...but we didn't know they were subject to tax and so I didn't know to specifically list them on the manifest.
