ill try keep this short. im a kiwi but ive been away 3 years so it may as well be like im moving there for the first time what with all the stuff i have (still, after getting rid of a load of stuff) my boyfriend is irish and is emigrating for the first time. we have two boxes that we are posting (it is WAY cheaper to post than to ship two boxes) so the rest will have to fit in the luggage. we are flying aer lingus from shannon (ireland) to heathrow next friday evening and flying out of heathrow the next day with malaysia airlines to perth, australia. we leave australia two weeks later and fly to christchurch (via auck) with air NZ.
so my question is..should we attempt to get a migrant allowance baggage allowance at such short notice? ive only heard about it in the last couple of days. even if not for me, for richie. id have to ring 3 airlines i think so thought id bounce it off of you guys first as ye are all fountains of knowledge!!
thanks so much

I'd say it was worth trying, as they have a better idea of how full the plane's going to be.
When I moved I didn't know about the migrant baggage allowance, but when I rang up to ask what their excess baggage charges were they said "hey, the flight's not that full so you can have an extra 12 kilos free"
However, you're probably less likely to get it with AirNZ, but you can always mail things from Australia

Yeah, go for it. I'd be really excited on phone to airline and say you've JUST had your visas approved and could they, would they, please pretty please let you have the migrant allowance ;) and oh you're in such a tizzy... hehe

cool, thanks for the help. id kick myself more i think if i didnt!! its more for my poor boyfriend who is freaking out about the weight of our bags (i came over with air NZ via LA with a luxurious 32kgs!! those were the days...)
i have family in aussie so i definately would ask them to post stuff if need be.
thanks again :D

Just a thought.
Did you book all through with an agent? Try them if Moorf's '3 airline blagging trick' doesn't work. :D

nope, they were all booked by themselves.we're both pretty good at booking flights now (well, i think anyway)via the internet so there was no point getting an agent to do it!! :)
