I am an experienced and well educated science teacher by trade, but in the US, I also run a small Martial Arts business for fun and little extra money. Do other people in NZ do things like this? What is it like operating a small business in NZ? Is it legally possible to do so with a PR? Or is there something else that I need to take care of?

Hi

We have our own IT security awareness company here, having transferred it from the UK where it had been registered.

Our ITA was tootling through and we had enough points etc, but OH got a job offer in meantime, so PR was completed quickly.

It may or may not apply to you but here goes.

In our 1st week here we applied to register the company and recieved our registration, about $200 a bit of form filling and came through in a week or so. We found an accountant, this was essential for us as it's was going to be my full time employment here and TBH we had enough to do settling in.

We applied for our personal and business IRD numbers, again easy to do. Our accountant does the yearly accounts for us, I do everything else day to day.

OH & I now work full time for the company, we both have PR.

The only thing I'd mention is that if you are going to need stuff like indemnity insurance, which I'm sure you are, start to get these things sorted asap. The kiwi laid back attitude doesn't help when you have a client pulling out of a deal because the broker can't be bothered for weeks.
