Well we have been here 2 whole weeks now, and only just got the phone & internet setup, so this is the 1st post for a while.

First thoughts on NZ? well not here long enough to form any informed veiws but gotta say the scenery here is great- and i dont just mean the obvious spectacular stuff but sheer variety - for example we went on a 15k ride out to the beach and saw "derbyshire" stone walls on gently rolling hills, great "californian" style houses, flat 'lincolnshire' wetland reserves, "Cornish" cliffs, and tropical beaches.

The people so far are generally freindly, with only a few people being wary or possibly offish to us (because we are immigrants)

The choice of cars is simply staggering- japanese imports galore, big american cars, and old classic british cars almost rustfree! In our 6k trip from our suburb to town center we must pass 20-30 cars parked on the roads for sale, and they change every few days, and we have also seen campers and boats too. So far we have bought a toyota and mitsibushi.

School- our 9 yr old Jake has done a week, we were surprised the school seemed a bit run down and so did some of the kids, but in hindsight that was more our opinion, and we hadnt adjusted to seeing bare footed non-uniformed (and non-washed) kids. now Jake likes it and is making freinds and wouldn't be seen anywhere with shoes on (and 3 weeks ago he would ONLY wear Nikes or throw a paddy!)

Houses- Yep they are pants! We are renting an overgrown static caravan that calls itself a house. The newer ones are nice, our brother in law has one and the brick/tile construction and modern insulation make it feel solid, but our 1970's effort is cold 2 hours after sunset, really chilly in the morning, and has enough condensation on the windows to fill a bath. Single glazing i can live with, but when we buy we will have so look into what is available re heating. (and this is Northland in the spring, god help the rest of NZ!!)

Started work and they took us out for A PINT on friday, but that turned into about FOUR!!! :laugh they are a nice crew.

Oh and Pack n save is heaps (oops kiwi words creeping in) better that countdown, and cheaper.

Radio stations here have Black Thunder 4x4s just like the UK!!

Anyway, its generally ok so far, now looking for a cheapy boat on TradeMe (but dunno what sort as never had one before  ) but then never emigrated before and we managed that.

Anyway, gotta go now, especially as the wife has started talking with that thing where the end of every sentance goes up kiwi-style!!! Yet she hasn't even noticed it yet, but our folks on the phone in the uk have :laugh

Glad to know that you are settling down fast.

In the supermarket, have you seen people in pyjamas? ;)

Can't wait to see the pic of your boat :D

Okay, I'm wading into my response to this deliberately unawares (what does that wink icon mean here?), because I think what I'm about to say speaks volumes... either about me or NZ or both. And I want to be honest. So:

I can well believe that Kiwis would do this because it has already occurred to me to do so. At least to go in my track pants and my wee pair of Warehouse slippers with the noisy clickety-clack soles.

Although I have not actually done so yet, one thing's for sure: if I was out in the car in that attire and had to nip into Woolie's at short notice, I would do so pretty much compeletely unashamedly. And I'd sure mooch up to the dairy thus.

There is a pretty definite sense in which Kiwis wouldn't care if you did, or at least that once you've been in NZ a while perhaps you don't care as to whether Kiwis do care.

Sometimes I think that living here is a bit like living constantly with three pints inside you.

I know what you mean though, its quite liberating at times...

Charlosparky, glad you have settled into your "shack", dont worry it gets warmer soon, and a bit less condensation.

But you may want to change houses around March next year ready for winter!

You sound happy enough for now, hope you get your boat sorted.

Well once my slippers are on they take some getting off ...... nipping to the 4 square in them is a regular habit of mine ..... and you're right ... I DON'T CARE !!!

Oh gawd , I must come across as the weird one here, but I could never go out in my slippers or barefoot and feel comfortable!! Once a brit, always a brit! I put the washing out this morning in my dressing gown and felt very conspicuous!

Charlosparky you made it!!!!! I do love it when I hear from people who've been lurking on the forum for ages planning their journey....and then suddenly log on and they are there, with their bare footed children, living it!!!!
Non washed, non uniformed, non shoe wearing kids - great isn't it!
Keep having fun guys!

Me too, and I'm a Kiwi. My Dad (also a Kiwi) would have a fit if we left the house in slippers (not that I live at home anymore but that kind of thing got drummed into us as kids!)!! Well, I might walk around pak 'n save in bare feet at the height of summer but that would be the extent of it. I love how you guys adopt the local laid back fashion. It's taken me 6 months here to stop worrying about what I wear into 'town'. Finally back to not giving a damn.

Oh yes - didnt take me long after getting here to become like this.
But I still do laugh to see kids at the mall on late night shopping night ready for bed.
