Wanna buy a boat that can be towed behind the car and easily launched. I fancy a cheap ($1500-$3000) relaxing trailer sailer, wife wants something with an engine that "wont lean over". Never had a boat before, so where can i find info for beginners on what to buy, what to look for, what magazines have the info without assuming i know anything?
Obviously i know that port is a drink, and stern is "the look" from her indoors and the keel is when you fall over :laugh
Honestly I have no idea but any info would help

Have you thought about a RIB.Good to start with I think. Also try and do a day Skipper course. They run them in the evenings at local schools.

Hi
We got into sailing about 10 years ago at the ripe old age of 40 and started with a 22ft Noelex trailer sailer - they are fairly popular, not too sure of the price tho. Check out trade me - usually lots on offer there.
We have recently bought a gorgeous 10.5 metre Holland and are about to go out on her for the day. Just love sailing and fishing in the weekend. So if you spot 'Xaviera' in the bay - that is me. As for heeling over, I dont like too much myself but all yachts are different. As for motor boats - bah humbug - noisy things.

Charlo - a rib is a rigid inflatable boat, not an edible morsel!! :laugh

i was just getting hungry too! :laugh
Thanks for the advice. I have been offered an old 18ft trailersailer for $700, but it is plywood not glassfibre and "needs a paint". It is ready to sail but I assumed they were all glassfibre and the wood thing worries me. But I dont mind painting it and have built campervans in the past so interior do up is no problem, just gotta convince the wife. Do I need any licence or tax etc to sling it off the nearest beach?

you'll have to speak to the NZ gang about that, but I would strongly suggest lessons first before attempting sailing, especially in the sea, don't want you becoming another statistic..... :no

I also would suggest sailing lessons and a day skipper course - remember New Zealand weather can change rapidly as can sea conditions.
As for launching, most people launch off ramps. Here in Napier if you don't belong to the club you pay a small fee.

Have you contacted your local yacht club - they'll be a mine of information in relation to regulations, local waters, and the best boat for you.
I'm almost positive there's one in Whangarei as I'm sure I've eaten at the restaurant there...
