Hi all! Just doing a little research on storing your furniture after it arrives in NZ. We want to stick the lot into storage for 6 months, can anyone recommend a storage place in Wellington, or would it be best to go with the recommendation of the Shippers/Removal people?

Hi Lake Isle

There are a few in welly. I haven't actually used any self store although I think they might be much cheaper than the shippers. Although you might be able to haggle with the shippers? Most of the global shippers seem to have storage facilities out at Seaview or on the Gorge.

Will you be here when your stuff arrives or will you be relying on someone else if you use a self store?

Here's a couple I found and it may be worth checking into them for rates etc.

If you're from the UK it will be cheaper to store it there for a certain amount of time before shipping it.

Thanks Smiler! I've worked out from one of the sites you suggested that it'll cost roughly $50 a week to store (we have a 20ft Container but not full). We will be living there, but for insurance reasons, and hassle factor, seeing whether its worth just storing it. (we'll find a furnished flat/house). Also thanks sizzlingbadger, I would have thought with the exchange rate, it would be loads cheaper taking it over and storing it there? I've not looked into storing it here, but will do now!
Now I just have to look into the insurance of the container for the voyage! rrghhh.

Try Letton percival www.lettonpercival.co.uk (http://www.lettonpercival.co.uk)

Much cheaper than shippers insurance and many of us have used them on this forum. They come well recommended. :nice1

I think our shipping company, PSS, said we could store it in the UK free or at a reduced rate for a while. Don't quote me on it as it was a long time ago.

When we got here we were lucky enough to have a rental with a double garage and we stored our containers worth in there :nice1

I've emailed Letton Percival! Our shippers quoted us 3%, thats quite hefty I thought, I hope Letton can beat that! Speaking to Hubby, we've decided we want the stuff in New Zealand, and wont store it here, with the storage companies in NZ you have access to the rooms/garages you hire, we've got a toddler, so will want to get to the toys, and various related toddler stuff as you do, I don't think Singapore Airlines would appreciate a ride on JCB digger being zoomed about in the aisles!

From memory LP were about 1.5%. We had a claim and they were very helpful. They sent out a local assesor in Wellington and dealt with our claim very efficiently.

If you go with them, they have simple forms to fill in. We attached polaroid pics of our high value stuff when we sent the proposal forms back, while we were still in the UK. We also took pics of our stuff before the shippers got their ugly mitts on it too.

I phoned Grace (the NZ half of our shipping contract) today to find out what they will charge for storing our stuff if it arrives before we have a hous to put it in. They will charge us a one off fee of $750 to cover them untloading the container and putting it in storeage and then from storage back into a lorry ofr delivery. There will also be a $300 per week fee for storage. The up-shot of it is we will wait before we call for our stuff. The cost is rediculous, we could rent a small house for a little more to pit all our stuff in. Even if we were to put our stuff into a private store we would have to pay for the $750 unload.
