Hello

We've got our medical reports back, all sealed in seperate envelopes with the doctor's signature across the seal. I was going to put them in the ITA as they are but I've read the old threads on here and now I'm thinking I should open them up to make sure that all the details are correct.

Also, the instructions say you only need to send your chest x-rays if there are abnormalities on your x-ray certificate but how do you know if you have abnormalities if you don't read the report?

If the doctor hasn't told you anything about the medicals, do you just assume you've passed and are all ok?

I want to sneak a peek but don't want to invalidate them or something and have to pay all that money again!

Regards

Karen

Hi there,

Are you in the UK? We got our medicals/X-ray results back a week ago from Gatwick and they were just in an ordinary envelope which I opened and had a good read through. Our X-rays were not in the envelope but the hospital had completed the Chest X-ray form saying no abnormalities.

I submitted our ITA in person at New Zealand House on Friday and the guy checking my paperwork made no comment about the medicals being 'open' which I would take to mean that they were fine.

I know the doctor I saw did medicals for countries other than NZ and for Airline staff - maybe they require sealed results. If in doubt - phone the doctor and/or NZ house and ask them.

Best of luck,
Dawn

I opened our xray reports because I didn't know any better and found the consultant reported I had TB. I called to correct this and the secretary went ballistic at me, even though everything was their mistake.

I'd still open them again, they are your reports. I can't begin to think of the hassle if we'd allowed our reports to go up to NZIS incorrectly showing that I had TB. :exit

Mistakes are much easier to correct at an early stage, rather than 3 months down the line when your CO gets his/her mitts on the medicals.

My medical reports were sealed, I was told not to open them. Yeah right ..... I opened them - nobody said anything.

They are your reports and you paid for them .... open them !!!!

Ditto, they don't have to be sealed, they are your reports, after all, you want to know what you paid all that money for don't you??!!! :laugh

It also gives the results of your chest x-ray in there too, so you have to read it don't you ;)

We found that the docs kept thinking of medicals for Oz, and those ones do have to be sealed and signed by doc, but NZ ones are different, or they were last year! Lost count the amount of times they tried to tell us we were going to Oz, good job we had read up on the NZIS site and knew the score, as some things needed done differently!

Ours came back to us open, but the doc kept the xrays, we never saw them again!

Yes, the X-ray doc sealed my x ray and warned me not to open it but I think he was confused between NZ and Oz so I opened it and then took it to my medical appointment. Nothing else was sealed....it was all handed to me that day and I sent it to NZIS open.

Ours were given to us unsealed - check that every box has been ticked/crossed and that there are not any abnormalities that may cause concern for NZIS - forwarned is forarmed!!!

Ours were sent to us in an ordinary envelope and it didn't even occur to me not to have a good look. After all, i'd never had a medical before and wanted to see the results for myself.

Here's the official line.... and more info about the medicals etc.

http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/general/generalinformation/qanda/Healthpolicychangeseffective28November2005.htm

Our medicals ran out before we got our ITA so we had to have them redone here in NZ, we didn't need the xrays redone (they last longer - about 6mths I think instead of 3) and the doc here simply filled in the forms I'd printed off and handed them back to me when I returned to pick them up a few days later - no envelope!

Mine was sealed and I decided it was best not to open it, just in case although the doctor had told me everything was clear. We also handed it in in person and the guy let me have a look before he filed the papers away.

Remember up until a few years ago all patient notes were sealed and the patient had no right to see them. I think some doctors are still a bit hung up on that sort of thing.

I had mine done here and NZ, and the dr just gave me back the pieces of paper with my blood results from the lab, the xray film and the completed form. He didn't even bother with an envelope.

Ours were sealed - but I wasn't going to send them without having a peak to check everything was in order!!! NZIS didn't say anything about the fact I'd opened them.

Ditto - ours were sealed (done by Bridge Clinic in Maidenhead), but we wanted to know that everything was o.k, so we opened them up, (not the x-rays as they showed us those at the clinic, said they were fine and they were sealed in a separate envelope), but the actual medical reports. Did our best to seal them up again so it wasn't too blatant, but anyone looking closely would have been able to tell that we had opened them. We've had our settlement interview and apparently no problems with our medicals or documentation. Its funny, - I didn't actually think I had hepatitus, aids, TB and numerous other things on the list that I'd never even heard of, but was nice to see it confirmed in black or white!

we had our medicals done yesterday and the doctor told us to open the envelopes when we get them and check that everything is done correctly as a mistake can cause all sorts of problems .
We went to Harley st London on reccomendation of Olivia ( Thanks Olivia) and had all xrays, blood etc done within a couple of blocks. This was cheaper than if we got it done locally plus we would have had to go to our local nhs hospital for xrays and joined the Q.

If anyone needs a good doctor pm us

Hi,

I just thought I'd give the you the answer I received today when I rang NZIS in London. I had a question that I needed answering re birth/adoption certificates and thought I would ask at the same whether the medical reports should be sealed. The answer I got was YES. So I guess I'll be leaving them sealed. Boo.....

Hi Paula,

As you've probably seen from my repy to your other question. I have just returned from New Zealand House today, and we had opened our medical reports and just handed them in. They just take them out of the envelopes, check they are all there and put them into the rest of the other paperwork.

No probs with opening them... In fact I didn't even bother putting them back into a decent envelope after ripping the flap off the doctors envelope.

They just want them in date and correctly filled out.

Go on.... have a look ;)

Good luck

Dave

Just another update. I inadvertently opened Sam's medical report when it arrived by Registered Post on Tuesday morning. Silly me, I thought they would have posted an envelope within an envelope. Anyway, it was a good job I did as the doctor hadn't signed Sam's medical report at all and had not filled in the boxes relating to the blood tests :no - which incidentally are fine. So we then opened all the others to double check them too.

So this morning I had to drive up to Perth, yet again, in order to get Sam's report signed and whilst I was there they put all the medical reports in new envelopes and sealed them for us. So, best of both worlds I guess, opened, read and now resealed. Phew.

Dawn,

Do I gather from your reply that NZIS do not require the actual X-Ray itself, just the doc's report?

My understanding of it is that as long as your x-ray form is signed - no abnormalities detected then the x-ray itself is not required in your application. We never got our x-rays back from the hospital .. just the x-ray form, signed off as OK, and that is what we submitted.

Hope it helps.

As I understand it, for NZ immigration, you paid for the medicals so you can open them and submit them with your ITA. You do not need to submit the X-rays, as the results are contained on the form.

This is different to Aus immigration, where, although you pay for them, the doctor sends the documents straight off to the Aus Immigration Service and so you don't get to see them.

We opened our medicals and submitted them with all the other documents that NZIS required. Nothing was said.
