I have tried several companies in the north island for work as a community support worker. There are plenty of jobs available but none of them seem interested in formally offering me a position in writing, this then leads to the catch 22 problem of no offer no visa. I have considered going to NZ on a holiday and looking then, but I feel this may yeild the same results.

Anybody done the same, had same experiences ?

Appreciate your help

PS: My husband has been offered a position for coach driving but they cant gaurantee him 30 hours, the 22 problem again., :hopeso

I think its the Catch 22 situation that everyone has experienced. The only thing I can say is that I suspect companies are more likely to take you seriously if they can meet you face-to-face. Its a gamble risking all that money travelling over, but I can't see many people offering jobs to people who haven't made the effort to go to NZ and meet them.

I'm thinking it over at th moment, my problem is I'm not sure there are too many jobs in NZ to go for!

Best wishes & good luck.

Cheers
Jon

Am in agreement with Jon

We came over for a 'holiday' in May, with the same thing in mind - basically to see if we could line up a job for hubby. He is a welder, so it would have pretty much impossible for him to be offered a position over the phone anyway. It was relatively easy, and I do think potential employers will prefer you to make some kind of commitment, ie a trip over. Yes, its alot of money, but we felt it was a risk worth taking.

Also, Have you ever been to NZ before? If not the trip would serve two purposes. After all, you may find that NZ is not for you.

Yep, just to re-iterate what has been said before, definitely worth investing some money in a flight over to NZ to meet face to face with potential employers. They do appear to make decisions quite quickly too judging from our experience and other stories on the forum. So set up loads of interviews, with a few days off to explore ;) , and I am sure you will get further in your quest for a job offer. :nice1

I wouldn't bother coming over in Dec '04/Jan '05 - seems that the employment scene is quiet during these times due to the summer hols / Xmas hols etc.

Sorry to hear about your predicament, but i know there are a lot of folks in the same situation, which isn't much help to yourself. Now you mention hubby is a coach driver, yes? Obviously i don't know who has offered him a position but there is a company that is actually accredited and i think could offer more than 30hrs a week.At this moment the company has slipped my mind, so i suggest to you get on the NZIS site and find that company.

Just come across this company though....www.pacifictourways.co.nz give these a try if you haven't already done so. Here's another www.greenlinemotors.co.nz and another www.tourism.net.nz/tours/scenic-tours/ If you go into www.yellowpages.co.nz and search for sightseeing coach tours there are plenty of company's with websites. Enjoy searching.

I am a HGV driver who has along with another forum member been offered positions with haulage company's in NZ solely on the result of a couple of e-mails and phone calls. I do know that NZ are crying out for drivers whether it be HGV or PSV.

Sorry i couldn't be of more help.

Hi there,

Our experience went like this, applied for lots of jobs on line no results, hubby came to nz on fact finding mission, march last year. with a few interviews lined up, everyone he met were so positive, and if he would of been living in nz there and then he would of had a job. Anyway 2weeks later he returned home feeling very positive, he had one interview which was very promising, but after making the last two candidates, he missed out on the job because he was not actually in nz. So we decided unless we were in nz our chances of work were very limited. Anyway to cut a long story short we have now been in nz 4months, havelock north (hawkes bay) my husband has been working since jan, wait for the punch line: the job he missed out on is the job he managed to secure, so in our experience being in nz for us was the right thing to do.

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for your help and advice .Will look into the sites and let you know how we are getting on . I have been offered a job subject to an interview when we arrive in nz If the interview is successful the company have said they will do me a job offer in writing so iI can apply for a work permit and then my husband could get an open work permit . anyone got any ideas as to whether we should have qualifications accessed before we go to nz and also police checks /medicals . we cannot put in EOI as we are over the age limit of 55 years .Our plans are to stay there on work permits and when our daughters and families have been residents for 3 years they will be able to sponsor us for residency any help appreciated

Angela,

My wife was a RSW before our children came along and now we want to immigrate to NZ she has now had her qualifications assessed by NZQA.
Although the level which came back was not quite high enough to get automatic PR they have said with a skilled job offer we can then get PR.
This job that you have applied for as a CSW is that with IHC? My wife worked in a residential respite establishment(special needs)for nine years and her qualification is a City and Guildes Community Care which she did before they had the NVQ(2YRS FULL TIME)
Good luck with your application it does sound promising that you have a job offer subject to interview.

Regards Bakehouse

Could you gather enough points to submit EOI without a job offer? If you have skilled qualifications you only need to get 100 points. They are being processed relatively quickly these days too.
