OK, we've been here 3 weeks plus...time for an update about what to do/not to do/questions about about what to do next! Actually I just need to get a lot of stuff off my chest!

1 : John Mason removals worked well. Three guys took 4 days to pack our house and load it into a 40 foot container. I was skeptical as to whether we'd need a 40ft container...but it occupied just over 3/4 of it - exactly as every estimator we had round said. They were round at 9.30 - worked through lunch and finished at 3.30 ish (bit before sometimes). No complaints. Mind you the wife and family were living at a friends' house which made things much easier.

2 : We'd booked a taxi plus trailer to take the 6 of us plus luggage to Heathrow. The driver turned out to be an old friend who had recognised us on the telephone when booking, but didn't let on incase it prejudiced our choice of taxi firm! Smashing bloke - avoided the traffic jams and helped us in with the luggage. I can supply his name/company upon request (based in Herts), but I am very biased.

3 : Heathrow was a complete nightmare. Singapore opened the gates later than they should. We arrived 4.5 hours before departure (website said gates opened 240mins before flight). We queued solidly the whole time we were there. We deviated neither to the left or to the right - there was nothing that we could have done to get through more quickly. Eventually we ran for the plane, arriving about 20mins late (so queing/running for about 5 hours). Kids did sooooooooo well.

4 : Flights and children were fantastic. They'd never flown before and were enraptured. Sam (age 2) managed to watch about 10 hours of Spongebob! Food was great. Thouroughly recommend Singapore (oh yes - phoned beforehand to book seats in a block and confirm 30kg per person - no problem)

5 : Went swimming at Singapore airport. Kids loved it. Fabulous place.

6 : Arrived at ChCh. Airport. So small! Someone helped us with our luggage. Nice guy. Families jump queues - wonderful.

7 : Rental car from EZY Drive (people carrier)- cheapest we could find from the UK. Very cheerful too! Did for one week the we got an old one form a car shark. Good fun though.

8: We have a fully furnished rental house in Riccarton. We were going to have one in Burnside (memorial Avenue) - but the estate agent changed their story about letting (5 months min instead tof the 3 months we wanted) without reason/apology etc, just before we left the UK. Much emailling/phoning in the early hours! The house is great - if cold....very cold....the owners live next door and are great. They chat to the children and have helped us out quite a bit.

8a : Pak 'n' Save and K-MART are our second homes.

9 : Started school after a few days only to be released on holiday for 3 weeks - TEACHERS...only work half the year!!!! Job looks great...looking forward to homework marking soon!

10 : Have started the house search bit. We found a house in Parklands that looked great. We put in an offer....then the crunch came....How do I get my money from the UK? Lots of people had recommended HIFX on this forum, so before we left blighty I tried to join....but they wouldn't let me as I'd be in NZ before I transferred my money (house sold/completed a few days after we departed). So upon arrival I tried to join HIFX here. Managed eventually once I could located a fax machine (soooooooo many people/firms rely on them out here it seems!). But here is where I met the problem. To transfer money to here they need the money there. But how do you get money to them. I had assumed I could do it via online banking (with BArclays), but no! The limit is something small like £1000 per day. I called the call centre (sad)...how about telephone banking sir? yes ok. "It'll take 4 - 10 working days for a letter to reach you..." then another week for it to be redirected (can't update address at same time!), then you can transfer up to £20k. Errrrrrr - having sold a house I now have about £100k to transfer and I need to do it soon, if I want to buy the house we saw. Write a letter they said. I did. It arrived there a couple of days ago - track and trace says so. The funds haven't moved. If only I'd thought before we left I could have left instructions with the bank before we left. At this rate I will have to fly back to give the instruction face to face. Anyone else had a problem - or is everyone else more organized?

Rant over. I feel better. Should have put that one in the financial section. Sorry.

11 : Money frustrations aside - we are happy!

12 : Kids are in a fun school - Ilam. They do so much more sport/outside activity that in the UK - it's great.

13 : There are so many clean neat parks for the childre to play on/in - wonderful. Also so many things are free - the museum, botanic gradens(wonderful - really wonderful), riccarton bush. The gondola/tram are great (not free). We've bought a season ticket for the family. Bottle Lake Park is AWESOME - a vogue word if ever there was one.

14 : Couldn't end on 13

So there you have it in writing. We love Chch and NZ 3 weeks in. People (on the whole) are friendly and helpful, and everything is so children orientated (perhaps that is what we are concentrating on!). I'll write again when the 6 month blues have set in. IN the meantime, thank you for wadding through this missive. I feel a lot better even if no-one reads it.

MAny thanks to all those who have answered queries along the way...there are still more questions to come. In the meantime - how do you get money out of Barclays?

Cheers

We are still in the uk - but have set up accounts with ASB and moved money using A CHAPS payment from our Lloyds account to the ASB account in London, it is sitting there in an account with our name on it at the moment waiting for us to give the ok to transfer/exchange to a NZ dollar account in our name. A CHAPS payment costs £20 to move the the money.

Could you sort out with Barclays for someone else to be a signatory or even fax them a directive over? Or ifthey faxed the chaps form over to you could you complete it and send it back?

Nice to read the rest of your post and you seen to be getting sorted.

Glad to hear your 2 year old was ok on the flight - did you use 'drugs' at all???? :laugh Have bought one of those leap pad systems to try and keep Emerson entertained for a while (he'll be 3 in Jan) keeping it as a surprise till we get on the plane - something new - may even wrap it up to add a couple more minutes of excitment to the boring journey!!

Keep us informed of your progress - hope you manage to get your money sorted soon!

Just got off the phone from Barclays..our own branch (28 years with the same bank)...they can't deal with large money transfers by letter...so they have passed it over to the main sorting office in Leicester. There is no number for the Leicester office - so back to customer services....

If I'd have known....I'd have got this all sorted before we left....:no

Great post and full of useful info. We're considering using John Masons and Singapore airlines, so great to hear your positive feedback. Not sure what to suggest in terms of money/Barclays, but wanted to say thanks for posting your experiences as these are so useful to those of us who hope to follow in your footsteps very soon.

Glad to hear that (money transfers aside) everything else is going well for you - keep us posted with how things work out with the house..fingers crossed!

firstkings, glad to hear you love chch as much as we do. Funny, we had the same problem when we arrived - arranged a rate with HIFX, then couldn't get the money from Barclays - aargh! A couple of weeks later, we were sorted, but it's stress you can do without.

Welcome!!

Hi Firstkings, congratulations on making the move to Christchurch - our first choice when we eventually get out there. Still waiting for the ITA some 2.5 months after being selected

Thanks for a great post and for giving me an insight into the first few weeks of your new life. It sounds like you're settling in well (apart from the money issue). Hope all continues to go well. :nice1

Hi Firstkings

So glad you are settling in. My 3 yr old watch Scooby Doo on singapore airlines. Was the swimming pool at the airport?

Sorry to hear re money issue. My mother in law had the same issue re transferring large amounts of money however a bit easier for them as they have moved to France, not so far to nip back over.

I hope it gets sorted soon. Keep us updated.

Marcia - no drugs for the flight. We left on the 18.30 flight so i was getting around bedtime for the young ones anyway...they slept well. The second flight was more of a problem for their sleeping pattern, but because they had the tv/game console thingies they were all entertained all the way. The only thing we took for them (ages 9,7,5,2) that they needed were cuddlies and pencils/paper. That was it...the rest was DISNEY/PIXAR/DREAMWORKS etc! Squarepants? More like SquareEYES!

I forgot to add to the airplane thing that all the KIWIS on the flight were really nice/chatty/helpful...a real difference for us reserved southerners!

KAte - how did you solve the money transfer problem...? I spent ages on the phone last night....I have to wait until Wed next week to see if they know what they are going to do! (Large Bank speak presumably). There must be a way through - but nobody that end seems to know How to do it with certainty...except "You need to visit your branch" (All the Kiwis here say "Can't you phone your contact at you home branch?"..I reply "I am a number not a name or a face at my home branch!")...OK rant over again....calm....calm....

Nippa&Pippa - Our house was let by "Whittle, Knight & Boatwood" - be aware that they do not let without someone first viewing the property. Someone from my school went round for me...(!). Don't take our house from 1/12/06 as we may need to extend our contract a bit!!!!! It is on Puriri Street (nice road - wide enough to do a 180 turn in a MPV without any worry, and very near to Riccarton Mall - al ovely place to look at things you can't afford).

Angie and Mick - the swimming pool is on the roof of the airport at the hotel. Hotel customers get to use it free. We had to pay (Not much by British standards as I recall), but the little one was free and they included towel hire (swimming togs can be hired, but we brought our own in our bags and had a plastic bag to put them in (Wife is very practically minded!). Mind you, you could just dry them out under the hand dryer! The pool is NOT that big, but enough to freshen us up/keep our little ones occupied. There is a spa pool - very nice and pool side showers. I felt a bit sorry for all the people sunbathing poolside/reading intellectual novels as our brood were out for a fun time and can genearte quite a bit of noise. Never mind eh? We'll never see them again.

Right time to go and cancel house buying contract/phone solicitor/mortgage broker etc. Sad. Still at least I should be getting 1.4% interest on my cash while it's sitting there! Mustn't start....calm....calm....

Cheers

Its good to hear that you and your family have arrived safe and sound, and not the worst for wear as so many seem to do.
Thank's for the heads up on John Masons we have booked them for the end of November and i must agree they have been very good and helpful with all that we have requested of them.
Keep us all updated as it is of great help to those of us still awaiting our big day.

Fantastic post. Hope you get that money transfer bizo worked out soon. In this day of internet etc you'd think it would be easy. Hey ho, banks over here are def more customer focussed than the UK ones I dealt with, just watch out for the hard sell - eg 'Do you need any insurance with that cash withdrawal?' :laugh :laugh

Glad you're enjoying Chch.

Hi. Welcome to New Zealand :clap You shouldn't have any problems with your house purchase just because your money hasn't come through. You've just got to explain the situation to the agent and it should be fine. I work for an estate agent. :o But also, friends of ours had this situation when they arrived last year (they ended up transferring in small amounts) and it was fine. Seriously, people are (usually) very understanding here. I hope it all works out well for you.

Hi Soon2b!

(Hope you don't mind me using the informal shorthand version of your name)

We explained everything in intricate detail to our estate agent sevearl times - but at the end of the day, the person selling the house needs to pay off a mortgage, so in a relatively short time we need to get all the cash over or take a loan from somewhere - our mortgage broker advised us about this and when she got to the interest rate bit I started laughing....

OUr car seller is doing that sort of thing for us and we are desperately trying to get money out of a cash machine every day to give to him....but for a house? How could that work unless the house was new or the seller had no need of the money to buy another property? If there is a way round please let us know!

Cheers
