Hi everybody,

I am an undergraduate hospitality student who is looking for opportunity to work and live in NZ next year around October. From the immigration website, I found out that only hospitality job like kitchen chef and hospitality supervisor are in the shortage list. So it seems to be impossible for me to apply by EOI. So, I am wondering whether I should join the WHS first and hope that my employer will sponsor for my working permit. Or, perhaps I should try my luck by applying for job directly with the hospitality organization itself. However, I think the chances for second option is quite slim as I will need to hold a valid working visa/ permit first before I apply for the position.
What should I do? Can anyone advise me on this matter? I would be glad if there is someone who is in hospitality line can help me on this matter, as I am eager to work and live in a beautiful and blessed country like NZ. I want to work my way from the very bottom line to supervisory and managerial level. Finally, I hope my dream will come true.

Many thanks,
Shalyn

I'm still learning the ins and outs of NZ immigration, but I'm pretty sure you can apply for jobs w/o a visa, but you need a visa to start the job, and you need a job offer to get the visa. There may be exceptions, but I think those are the basics.

Work Permits/Visas are issued AFTER a job offer and if NZIS (forget the name) is provided with enough documentation to prove that the prospective employer tried to find a suitable NZ employee but could not.

To be honest, most G8 countries have closed their borders except for skilled or family or long-term migration... "work my way from the very bottom line to supervisory and managerial level" is honourable, but if you are young and relatively inexperienced, WHS - Working Holiday Scheme(?) is probably the best option. I think you can claim EOI points for any NZ work experience.

Thank you for welcoming me and all the replies..
I have made up my mind that I will join WHS next year around October. At the same moment, I will also try to apply for job via internet too. Just to try my luck since it causes me nothing at all.
However, I wonder should I apply for WHS before I arrive NZ or otherwise. Is it advisible to arrive NZ as a visitor then only apply for WHS?

Details of the Working Holiday Visa are here:

This page has all the details of how and when to apply - for some of the schemes you are required to be in your home country to apply for the visa.
