I wonder if anybody can help/has experienced my situation.

I got 50 points on my EOI because I have a banking qualification and 30 points for more than 10 years work experience in banking. The thing is that I haven't worked in a bank now for more than 11 years. The jobs I've done since then have usually been accounts/admin related working in different types of offices. I will be job hunting once our shipment arrives on Friday and I've got that all sorted out so I need to clarify this situation before getting a job.

My question is - I really don't want to go back into banking again, presuming I can :? , so if I just get a job in an office doing accounts work again would that still count as being relevant to my qualification.

I checked with NZIS and they said that as long as my job is relevant to my qualification then I would get the extra points for being employed. It's a matter of interpretation really and a bit subjective. I could argue that part of my exams were in accounting so my job would be relevant.

Anybody else had their job/job offer and qualification scrutinised and had any arguments with NZIS over whether the job is relevant?

can't really give you more than an opinion on that, but I would have thought myself that as long its on the money management side it wouldn't matter if it was bean counting or banking. BUT... I was told by someone the other day that the job doesn't have to be relevant to the qualification, (although they may be talking about uni degrees) which surprised me. I will try to find out where they got that from.

Hi

Don't know if I can help too much, but I'll give it a go!

I've had a bad run in with the NZIS regarding my work experience, and it might be relevant to you.

I've a BA (Hons) degree in Business Studies, and my work experience is over 8 years in an admin/cashiers sort of field. I was told that I can't claim points for my work experience as it wouldn't be classed as skilled because you don't require your qualification to do the job........eeermm business studies and financial work experience!!!!!

Therefore I require a SKILLED offer of employment that's RELEVANT to my qualification and can't claim points for my work experience.

Hope it helps and its not bad news!!!!

Cheers
Jon

Thanks Veronica

Hi Jon

That doesn't sound very fair to me - as I said, these things are subject to interpretation and they can interpret things anyway they want.

I haven't got to the stage yet of having my EOI queried - we're on 105 points without a job for me, so I don't actually need any extra points at the moment, although it would be nice to have them.

Does that mean your EOI has been rejected - do you not have enough points now? You're way more qualified than I am as well :(

I didn't apply, I spoke to the NZIS at the London Expo last month. I'm now looking to getting a job offer so that I've got enough points without the work experience. As I said in another thread I doubt they take me seriously on the other side of the world though.

Where in Warrington did you live? - I'm from Widnes.

Cheers

Oh, you're not far from Kim39 (40) then. I was in Birchwood.

Oh yes, you were at the North West meet. Can you ask him to get over here with his truck as I've seen a three piece suite on the Trade Me (similar to e-bay) web-site that I want, but it's in Auckland :wah he could do a side line in furniture delivery for me :laugh

Hi, guys. Don't forget (e.g., Jon) to look at the upcoming December Enhancements. There is new language there about work experience and its recognition. Go to the home page of NZIS and look at the news items list.
Note also (warning: this is just my reading of things!) that work experience even now does not have to be full time. Our principal app. is in a field in which virtually everyone is to some extent part time. But it has its own NZ Job Classification number and is on their Class 3 Asssociate Professionals list. Her experience is almost 10 years, plus a directly relevant Masters, so we're hoping we'll be okay.

Matt.

Hi eveyone - first post, but been lurking for a while.

I am in a similar position with having a BA(hons) in Hotel & Catering Management, but never really worked in that trade. From reading above, it looks like the arguments I put in th EOI may not be accepted, ie that it was a business management degree, just focussed on Hotel & Catering sector. I'm also trying to get suitable letters from the Univ and current employer, saying the job benefits from me having that degree (any thoughts on that?)

So if my points are disallowed for the 10yrs experience - what options are there open for me? If I bite the bullet and go out in Feb to look for a job - get offer and get that into NZIS before EOI is reviewed in detail - does the job HAVE to be relevant to qualification to be counted?

Otherwise, do I just forget Residency route and go for the WTR route, again getting job offer and hoping I get work visa quick enough to bluff the employer that it is in place?

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Neil
