This came up as a side topic in another thread, and rather pompously I'm giving it its own posting because I'd love some opinions and I think this will help people:

Looking at the NZIS Ops. Manual language (what it doesn't specify, actually), it is not necessary for work experience being claimed for to be full time. It needs to be everything else (relevant, in line with the NZ Jobs Classification job description ,etc., etc.) but not, so to speak, 9-to-5 five days a week.

My own take on this is that they'll probably accept part-time experience as long as it has been sustained for a solid and worthwhile period (e.g., a Singing Teacher probably doesn't teach singing for 40 hours a week, but they'd expect such a person to have been employed for many months or years at a a stretch by a clutch of professional singing schools, teaching several days a week, and be grounded in the other job-skill requirements).

Is this your take on it? Please bear in mind I'm NOT talking about full-time status in relation to a job offer (that IS usually stipulated, I think). Only in relation to work experience years being claimed for.

Cheers,
Matt.

That's my take on it, Matt, but I'm not the definitive word. I'm considering ratcheting down to part time at my job for awhile and was wondering the same thing as you.

I'm going to be visiting with the NZIS marketing director here in Portland in the near future; if you haven't gotten an answer to this question before that time, I'll be glad to ask it then.

Hello there

I found this page which lets you calculate your work experience in years. Apparently the NZIS base full-time work on a 30 hour week if you work less than that they do some kind of calculation to work out what that would be in NZIS years!!!
So for example, four years of working a 15-hour week will count as two year’s full time work experience

Anyway I'm sure they explain it better than me

I hope this helps

Thanks, Feathers. Yes, I found that at about the time you posted! Oops - sorry for my mistake about part-time work not being covered.

It's food for thought for us. Our principal app. is in a fully NZIS-recognized job (it has a NZJC number and is their 'wanted-assoc.-professionals' list) in which, however, '9-to-5' employment is extremely rare. Hope they give us the chance to point this out. On the other hand, the career demands regular time such as preparation that we must remember to credit her with (i.e., not sell ourselves short). Added to that she has years of experience in strongly or partly relevant work, and runs a four-year-strong business that's strongly relevant to both her skill and her Masters degree.

Perhaps much depends on presenting a strong cumulative case on paper that indicates her breadth of experience (if we get that far!).

Matt.
