If I understand this correctly, as long as I buy a phone in the United States that has a sim card, I can take it to NZ and signup with Vodafone to get a new sim card....plug it into my phone and voila, done ya?

I'd like to buy the new Blackberry Pearl which is only available in the states from T-Mobile. My plan is to buy the phone, throw out the T-mobile sim card and buy a new one from vodafone. I also understand that I'll need to "unlock" the phone for any carrier use...I know I can get the codes off the web.

Is this a sound plan or risky?

I used T Mobile when I was in the States. I called them and told them I was moving to NZ and asked if they would unlock the phone. They were more than happy to do it. I also just faxed our lease to them and they waived an early termination fee. Now when I go back in Nov. I can just buy a pre-paid card and use that while I am there for the month.

Well a couple things....

1 - Vodafone doesn't sell the new Blackberry Pearl, which I'm wanting to use. Only T-Mobile sells it in the states.

2 - I know I can get it unlocked using instructions on the 'net.

So tehcnically I should be able to buy it in the states, remove the sim card and get one from vodafone ya?
