Although it will be along time before we make travel arrangements, it occured to me that I will have at least one, maybe still two children using a potty.
What do you do about potty training on a 24 hour+ flight. Do you bring them with you, or do airlines provide them? What happens if they have an accident in their seat?
I know this probably seems a bit paranoid, but I realised it could affect which airline we eventually choose, so anyone elses experience would be really useful!

Hi, can't help with the airlines I'm afraid, perhaps ringing them would be the best option. I'm potty training my 2 year old now and think he would probably be ok if I just took hime to the toilet every couple of hours and perhaps put a nappy on him for his sleep. You can get little portable toilet seats which may be the best option as I wouldn't think it would be fair on other passengers to have your child using the potty next to them (if they were having a poo for example).
My daughter will be 2 when we return to the UK so will probably be about ready too but to be honest if she wasn't worried then I would opt to delay until after we got home. Is that an option for you? Also bear in mind such a huge change in circumstances may cause your child to wet themselves again if they are in the early stages of potty training and want to go back to a nappy for comfort.
Sorry, I've reread this and haven't been much help really. Good luck with it all - rather you than me is all I can say :laugh

My daughter decided, after over 6mths of me trying to potty train her, that the week of removal men was the week she wanted to potty train. Probably because it was the best way to get lots of my time. I had to make to make a choice and didn't train her. I felt that with all the upheaval over the next few weeks she would undo all she had achieved. We stuck with pull ups and nappies for the flight, much easier. You could try explaining to yours that the pull up is only for this special day. You can also get inconitance mat which they could sit on which would stop the seat getting wet if there was an accident, (or use a disposable changing mat), but a bit hot and may get all bunched up if used for a long time.

I think I would go with the disposable pants too......those smaller toilet seats would work well also.
THere is enough to think about on a flight without worrying about that too... it's only a day.

Emerson will be 3 in January - he has occassionally shown interest in wanting to wear pants - we even went and chose his own, at playfroup he has told the staff he wanted to wee and his nappy was dry, but basically we are not pushing it, the upheaval and change in environment will be hard on all the kids! Add the fact that we won't have a washing machine for all the 'wet' stuff after any accidents - I suppose I'm taking the easy option and just leaving it till later, but it suits us!!
My advice to you would be to use trainer pants for the flight - I really wouldn't want to risk a wet seat or lugging wet clothes around, you can still keep reminding them to use the toilet every so often but if an accident occurs it's not a big issue if they have absorbant pants on!
HTH
BTW are you taking their car seats onto the plane itself or putting them in hold - just wondered - we discussed it and decided that it would be easier and give us more room and flexibility to not have the car seat on the plane! Just a thought!

My son was just over 2half when we flew to nz in april and we decided to put him in pull-up pants instead of pant which turn out to be best decision as it was hard enough to deal with waiting in long queue for toilet in airport, plane etc!!! or customs, or had to sit in your seat long period due to turmbulance (sp?) on way and way back! Ashley manage to keep his pull-up dry all the way as he ask for toilet at prefect timing! (lucky!!!) but on the way back to UK it was nightmare, he keep have accidents, (lucky still had pull-up on) as he was so tired and exhausted from flight and holiday in NZ. My husband and i decide we will put him in pull-up again when we fly out for good in two half week time, to save carry extra clothing just in case he does get wet!
So think of how much clothes do you have to carry if your children had accidents which most likely cos of jet-lag? or prefer for just 24-30hours of flight, wear pull-up, encourage them to still go to toilet as normal and carry few pull-up just in case? hope that help you

Speaking about car seats, i rang airlines, they said if your child is under 36months, you are allow to have car seat in plane as long you have book seat for your child! we opt for our car seats go in hold so we can have more room in the plane!! :yes

We are putting our car seat in the hold too.
I bought a potty for Isaac a few weeks ago as he started to take off his own nappy and go to the toilet on the floor. (Luckily we have laminate flooring!) But instead of starting potty training i have left it in the room so he can get used to it and moved him to pull ups as he can't seem to remove them as easily as nappies. He will definitely be wearing pull ups on the plane. I think my nervous system will have enough to cope with without the added worry of accidents.
I have also put off weaning him off his dummy (only has it for sleep) as i think this could come in very handy on the plane!

HI
Anna was three but occasionally had accidents, she would not wear the pull ups. I took the disposable changing mats by Pampers and put that under her. During the flight kept going to the toilet, excuse to get out of the seat. She was very good. Only accident was spilling the drinks. Did not find it to bad at the airport, plenty of toilets, however I took her to the toilet at every opportunity.

We were lucky in that my middle one was potty trained just in time, although from what I can remember I still put a nappy on her, she was only 2 1/2 at the time and still wet through the night, as I knew she'd end up sleeping it was only fair on her to put a nappy on.
On the dummy front (again with my middle one) we left her with the dummy, after a month of settling into our rental she put it in the bin and hasn't used it since :) I think she was just using it as a major comforter with all the stress and upheavel of the move.
