getting a foreign prescription filled

Since I will be on a working holiday visa, I won't have access to NZ health insurance (will have travel insurance...which means paying out of pocked then getting reimbursed). How would I go about getting a prescription filled for a maintenance medication? Would it be best to bring a prescription, note from my Dr. at home, both...

I am assuming I would need a prescription from a Dr. there and that I can't simply bring my US prescription to a pharmacy in NZ to be filled?

That's right, we can't dispense a prescription from anyone other than a NZ doctor - so you'll need to see a NZ doctor to get a prescription - just out of interest, what is the medication? As a lot of things you may be used to getting aren't available over here - even what I would call common medications
