Have booked flights today - leaving 18th January.....and counting already. Flying with Cathay Pacific and a measly 20 kilo luggage allowance. Planning to ship DIY style (thanks Jo B) and will order container for the 15th - giving other half 3 days to panic if all the stuff doesn't fit in the container and we need to dispose of it.
Giving my notice in at work on Monday (need to give 3 mths notice) and can't wait. I've spent all week fantasising about resigning!!!!!
Can't believe I'm finally at this point. Feel like i'm 'going home'!
Whahey, whooooppppeeee etc. etc. etc.
Would insert a dancing banana but don't know how to....so i'll let Smiler do it for me!!!!

Hi Hannah!
That is great news! Are you coming via Singapore? Just asking as freinds of ours are coming out in Jan - wondered how much flights for a family of four are?

Thanks all.
Our flights with Cathay go via Hong Kong with a 1 1/2 hour stop. We paid £2044 with Thomas Cook for 2 adults and 2 children (age 8 abnd 11). Cheapest flights we saw were £1755 - Heathrow to LA with virgin, 2 hour stop and then LA to Auckland with AirNZ. We decided not to take these as we wanted to avoid LA stop - agent told us that all baggage now has to be checked out and then put through customs again, it's not transferred to new plane automatically. Having done this trip twice now, once through LA and the second time through Kuala Lumpur, I think it's worth £300 to avoid LA. First time we were herded through to a small transit lounge where we had to show passports again several times, be patted down and then just watched by a guy with a gun. Remembering how exhausted we were I would not want to have to go and check out my luggage to put it back through. The hong kong stop won't involve checking out luggage and is just 1 1/2 hrs in a transit lounge.
Interestingly we had trouble coming up with any flights for January that were NOT through LA - there seemed to be loads of them left. Are people starting to switch on to just how awful it is to pass through LA and choosing to avoid it?
A slightly cheaper (as in cheaper than Cathay) flight was via Singapore but with an 8 hour stop - only £100 cheaper, and i felt that the stop was too long.
the frustrating thing is that when we came out on return tickets last nov we paid just £2400 for the four of us....but then we had booked almost a year in advance so we got the cheapest tickets you could find!
Just so happy to be flying as far away from LA as possible!!!!!!!

Re The luggage. Singapore air at first said they would only up it from 20kg to 25kg. After 4 e mails telling them how mean I though they were they uped it to 30kg. That's an extra 20kg between us! :clap
