Well we had five shipping companies around altogether, Crown, Britannia, John Masons, GB Liners, and Robinsons. After the first couple came, we quickly realised that we would be looking at 3/4 of a 40 foot container for all our stuff - which made kev change his mind about some of the items he had planned to sell. But we wanted to be able to compare all five companies equally, so didn't alter what we telling them all at that point.

The five quotes came in and out of them all we were only unhappy with one company - and it was just the sales rep that put us off, John Masons, he was more bothered about his 'gadget' and kept talking over us and interupting when we tried to say anything and didn't really seem to listen to us - their quote was one of the cheapest however and we know other people on the forum have used them and were happy and at the end of the day the sales rep isn't going to pack the container - so they went on the shortlist.

Britannia and Crown were the dearest two companies, but we would have been happy to use either of them. In fact all the companies we had, we would have been more than happy to use and at the end of the day it came down to price!

We have opted for Robinsons. I'm not actually posting the amount as our shipment is not an ordinary one, having a lot of tools, machinery, and heavy items and special things which need crating which all add up. (if you really are interested you can pm me!) We have also had to request a container which lowers to the floor to load the heavy items. So it has been a bit more complicated than normal.

We decided against the shippers insurance as Letton Percival quote a cheaper percentage, 1.53% and every penny counts at the end of the day!

So the dates are booked now, they will be here for 3 days, 30th & 31st Oct and 1st Nov. Then we will be camping in a virtually empty house for 2 weeks with whatever we can beg borrow or steal from family and friends!! :D

:clap It's all coming together!

Don't forget that that LP charge an excess of £100 OR 1% of the value which ever is greater, so if you did have to make a claim, dependant on the value of your goods, it could work out quite expensive :nice1

We've (just) decided on Crown as they offered to better our cheapest quote, which seemed a decent deal. I haven't decided about insurance yet though!

Glad i've just seen your post Lupin77. We've had quotes back from Crown and John Mason this week. I was really hoping Crown would be a reasonable quote as i was very impressed with them but the difference between them is massive. But now i've read your post i think i'll go back to Crown and see if they'll lower their quote.
We too are undecided about insurance at the moment. Decisions, decisions.

Good Luck with the move Marcia.

Guys....haggle with Crown :nice1

I got my quote down by £500 and also managed to get a reasonable deal with the insurance which worked out if I needed to make a claim, cheaper than LP for a more extensive cover ie: mould & mildew, sets & pairs, derangement.
