Sorry might be a dumb question but if we visit NZ in April for reccy trip - I guess this will be later Autumn. How does Autumn in NZ compare to Autumn in the UK. Wet, grey and miserable as it is in the UK today or clear blue skies?

Both :D

Seriously, it's best to come prepared for all weathers - especially if you're touring the entire NZ - you'll go from humid tropical in the north to cold alpine in the south.

Layers.....

It's probably practically impossible to answer that question! This year, late April was boiling (about 27 degrees for about a week - suddenly went pear shaped on Anzac Day), but I think that was pretty unusual! As Moorf says, prepare for anything and you'll be right!

We came over for a reccy and toured the islands in April 2005 and it was 20-25 degrees and sunny every single day for 18 days. With the exception of a day of rain in Christchurch.

How long's a piece of string?

Bring layers and a waterproof. :D

just to give you a clue, the weather forecasters can't even reliably predict the weather for later on the same day, let alone days, weeks months in advance. :-)

Definately go for the layered approach

I've just seen this hot off the press. It gives a fair view of the weather here over the course of a typical day :D

when we went in april 2006, we took summer clothes as well as warm clothes like jumpers just in case, and layers ourselves. We end up feeling odd one out as their autumn feel like our mild summer so we walk around in short and t'shirt while they wearing warmer clothes on!!! Yes some part of nz are warmer than other part, further south you go, colder it became.

We are still like that now, I dont think I have worn a winter jacket much (apart from is waterproof properties) since I got here! Certainly not over a jumper anyhow. Whereas a UK autumn I could be found in shirt, suit (with jacket) & big long wool coat, and we are just coming out of our 2nd winter.

It does depend alot on where you are going though, I am just talking about Auckland.

In sharp contrast I think we spent most of winter in our thermals with a couple of layers, a jumper and a fleece on!

Hum, I did not think i was being too clever when i posted such an open ended question. But thanks for the answers - they do help as it appears I need to follow the scouts and 'be prepared!'
