hi there. Can anyone tell me whether UK televisions work over in NZ? We're not sure whether or not to take ours and assume there might not be any point? What about the playstation? (thinking of Pingu and postman pat favourite DVDs for little one as these may keep me sane for the first couple of weeks!).

hi emery family.

UK tv signal is slightly different to NZ, because the sound "carrier" frequency is slightly different - SOOOO, you can't get sound, unless you buy a cheapo NZ video recorder and receive your tv signals via this, same as you do with sky etc. watch all your tv on AV channels via scart,or I even think channel 6 or 8 and use the video remote to change channels.
And it saves your sanity with the little ones too! Only thing you have to think about is that the NZ plugs are different, same voltage but different plug.

So take a cheap multi extension cable and chop the uk plug off the end and replace it with an NZ one. Then you can still uses your UK stuff without changing every plug. Good eh?!!

Hi saw this thread and thought I would also warn parents of teenagers that play games such as World of warcraft etc....YOUR UK game WILL NOT WORK here!

AND depending on your BB provider you may not be able to play it even when you spend $90 to buy it here!

I bought the kids a NZ version (I think its the US/Aus servers they use) and since we are now on WOOSH and they dont support gaming  its been a total waste of $180.

Jason has an XBox 360 but the internet connection is useless as the speeds crap. Telecom has a lot to answer for!

It may have something to do with the distance all those wiggly bits have to travel down the electric string to reach your home Kat, being a tad isolated!! :laugh

I play World of Warcaft using my US account and it works fine, but i'm using Telecom.

But after downloading episodes of Lost and South Park, using VIOP to call back to the states and gaming I'm getting close to my bandwidth cap. And the speed of my connection has been terrible the past week. ARRRGGGG I hate broadband here.

Did you catch it Sean???? My youngest started huffin an puffin saying that the two geeks they interviewed were noobs(and other unknown sayings!)

Jas was a level 14 in the UK.....he played from May to Sept with 4 hrs sleep a night!!! :roll and I thought the MIL was looking after him!

He is quite distraught about not being able to access his account and is thinking of selling his account on Ebay....and after seeing the segment on CL I recon some geek would probably buy it!

Oh well ...... I suppose going cold turkey is better for him in the long run, but it is a shame as he was hoping to keep in contact with his guild and friends from the UK thru it!

STUPID NZ broadband!.....I got them the 11gb cap...want to know how much we have used.............. not enough to register on the webpage!

AGGHHH this subject gets my blood boiling

Newish UK TVs work fine in NZ - as long as it can use PAL B/G as opposed to PAL I in the UK - as stated earlier, it's about the way the sound is carried, but pretty much all new TVs can now accept the standards - just check before you get rid :)
