Hi everyone
Having followed the movers' debates here, I was wanting to do door-to-port to save myself the scammy fees the moving companies sometimes charge.
When I asked John Mason for a quote door-to-port, they told me:
We can get you a quote but we are unable to allow you to look after
clearance / quarantine yourselves due to the shipment being transported
as a shared container but as an idea you would looking at paying
quarantine charges of about NZD$ 90.00 for this size shipment. Customs
clearance charges will be part of our cost to you.
Does this sound fair to you experienced people? Grateful for any advice!
Thanks,
Rose

$90 seems perfectly fair to me from a first glance. And GOOD ON YOU for getting that in writing! Even better if you can get them to specify that ou will not be charged for training costs, lightbulbs and loo roll or any other silly little add ons while you at it! I would also possibly ask for an undertaking in writing of what JM will do if TMC try to charge way more than this and give spurious reasons for it. Might as well tick all the boxes :nice1
Its when in in the few to several hundreds you need to shout loudly.
As a very rough rule of thumb based on our charges, we paid $150 for each of 2 x 20ft containers in extra charges. This included the fact that stuff was taken to storage and inspections were at the shippers, and the fact that they actually unbolted the door to the containers, and they didnt bring us the stuff in the original conatiner, but transfered it to a lorry. AND they brought us a few things earlier than the rest of it.
So i do feel that that is a fair price - anything above that, and especially anything SUBSTANTIALLY above that should be queried. Loudly.

HA HA to this part......THEY DONT CHARGE!!!! But $90 for the port charges sound cheap...sure he didnt mean GBP 90 (I miss my POUND Key :( )
I did all my stuff myself, it cost meGBP 260ish for the UK side and in NZ $240 for the Port duties $ 28.and some cents for MAF and because we moved before it got to CHCH an extra $147 dollars for shipping it from CHCH to Invercargill. BUT CUSTOMS....I took my form from MAF the fax from the Port company and he did the paperwork (he told me to go do some shopping for half an hour) and then gave me the invaluable info that I have up to 5 yrs to get my stuff over from the UK as many shipments as needed - I didnt know that. and then welcomed me to Ivercargill and told me the best Hauliers to ring to organise shipping it down here. Which was deliverd to my door and the boxes carried in the house to where I directed for no extra charge :nice1
cheers
Kat
