Hi,

We are on our way to Nelson at the end of the month. We own a number of vacation nightly rentals in the States and will have to be flying back and forth to attend to them- and other business matters in the States. Lots of frequent flyer miles at least!

We have considered buying a few in Nelson as well, and staying in whatever is vacant when we are in the country. We are looking at one in particular which is a remodeled 1920 cottage, already utilized successfully as a nightly rental. Does anyone out there on the forum have any experience with vacation rentals in NZ? Any words of warning?

Thanks in advance-

Wendy

Hi Wendy,

No experience of having a rental here although planning on it in the future since we've just sold our holiday rental property in USA. I'd say there probably aren't so many management companies out here. You might have to arrange cleaners etc. yourself, although I'm sure there are property managers - it won't be on the same scale as USA. (Our house was in Florida & there certainly won't be so many charges or rules - like about rubbish & having your lawns mowed etc. or else being charged a hefty amount in penalties for the housing association to do it for you here). Also if you sell one of the rental properties you buy here you won't get taxed with capital gains - you can own as many houses as you want (correct me if I'm wrong but this is what I've been told by friends who have several properties as their pension).
