One of the reasons we decided to emmigrate to NZ was my hubbie jobs situation. One company going bust, two redundancies and another company being bought out and relocating too far away. The current company he works for is owned by venture capitalists and is again being sold........ job security is a real issue.
He also commutes 3hrs a day for the job he is currently in, we don't want to upsticks and move again given the companies situation.
What is the job situation in NZ really like? Is redundancy a common occurance? He works in IT..... the Financial sector.

I work in IT for ASB and I'm trying to recruit for 2 positions, which have been vacant for about a year, and I'm finding it really difficult to get decent staff. IT staff will move at their leisure in NZ and they call the shots (to a certian extent). The reason for this is that the pay is terrible in comparison to Australia & UK i.e. all NZ'ers head their to make some decent money before coming back to buy a comparatively expensive house.
Provided you are happy earning a comparatively high salary and not looking for the highest rates in the world, it's not a bad place to be.
As for the commute, I'm 15-20mins door to door and live by the beach.
You can drop your CV onto the websites of all the banks over here.

If you are in a skill shortage with regards to IT you should be fine, hubby wanted to change jobs last year, and within two weeks he had 8 interviews and 2 job offers. A topic of redundancy is not one that has been raised at all, in fact his current company were struggling to recruit staff with the skills/qualities they needed.
We are in Auckland so thats the only IT market he knows. I would tell you what he does, but it just washes over me Im afraid, although he has an MSCE (x2) some Cisco and Citrix paperwork as well.

Myrkk,
Although my hubby isnt having a problem with forced redundancies over here, he has having a real (and at the moment severe) problem with companies treating thier staff like (insert bad word of choice here), and people having to leave becasue of it.Hes finding it really hard going as he was with his Uk employer for 10 years and in 2 years in NZ - hes now looking for his third Job!
I doubt its everywhere - but if you should be considering a job with Unisys at any point - the advise is "Dont". They literally have "a resignation of the week" problem, and staff are crumbling under the pressure that management are putting them under. Ive never seen so many people leave a job without the safety of another one to go to - but here they just want out.
Wedo know of some buyouts and stuff, but the few we have personally heard of, the staff stay on, so from that pov, you should be ok.

Cheers guys.
He isn't looking for the highest salary as long as we have enough to fund our motorcycle fetish we'll be happy. It's more quality of life and lack of worry we are after. At the moment we are living to work rather than working to live.
