Is it true that in order to open a bank account I would first need a residential address? I'll be staying in a hotel for the first 2 weeks, so does that mean I can't open an account during that period?

We opened one from the backpackers where we were staying so its obviously possible, could you use the works address until you have your own address. If theres a branch of any of the NZ banks near you at home perhaps you could open one before you leave.

No there are no NZ branches here, so I'm going to have to wait until I'm in NZ.
