My quarantine facility said that MAF can read Avid microchips....but I just wanted to make sure...have you guys heard anything to the contrary?

I saw some posts about this but they're years old.

Hi jb, I don't know, but when I had a question about bringing our dog and emailed MAF I got a fairly quick reply. The address is
imports@maf.govt.nz

Hope that helps, or perhaps someone will come along in a bit who knows the answer...

When I first had our cats chipped, I emphasized to the vet's office that the chips had to be ISO-compliant. Apparently, none of the admin assistants knew what that meant, because afterward, I found out that the cats had just received standard AVID chips. We had to pay again to have them rechipped (I was so not happy about this) with ISO-compliant chips (which also happened to be manufactured by AVID).

Then, when I was talking on the phone with Donna at JetPets, I told her about this and she said that the second rechipping would not have been necessary, that the regular AVID chip would have been just fine. I did not verify this through any other means, though, since at that point it was moot for us.

I would definitely recommend that you contact MAF to be sure.

Sorry that I don't have any definative answer on Avid chips, but if your pet doesn't have a chip yet, I know for certain "Home Again" chips are readable by MAF.

Good luck.

My dog has an avid chip - but it's from Canada (it has a bunch of digits and a letter, which is apparently different from the USA ones) that's about 5 years old. It is not an ISO chip. We gave the number to the pet exporter, who knew exactly what kind of chip it was and said MAF would have no problem with it. We also checked with the Quarantine facility I think, and they also said it would be no problem.

Funny story (sorry I probably already posted this somewhere). When Howie went for his second titre, the chip number that came up was not his chip. He was rescanned and rescanned and eventually discovered that he had a second chip that he must have received before we adopted him 9 years ago.

Thanks for the responses.

Lola was microchipped at banfield (petsmart's vet) yesterday. They actually implant both the avid chip and the iso chip to be doubley-sure. I was impressed!
