Hola everyone..
I have a question about schooling costs...
If I take a job in NZ and I am a UK citizen and I get the correct work visa, will I have to pay fees to school my children in NZ.
Oh and while I'm on, will my pc work in NZ?
Thanks
Rob

There are no compulsary school "fees" for state schools.
What they do have are "donations" (which you are expected to pay!)
These can vary considerably from school to school - area to area.
We currently are asked for $100 per year plus an ICT "upkeep" allowance of $40.
This cost is per year per child.
If your child attends a school without technology availability (for Year 7 and 8) they may attend another school for that session each week. That cost could be around $50 per year.
Add onto that the cost of books - normally covered in the UK - plus other stationary.
On average that amounts to around $100 per year per kid.
Also trips etc are extra. As is uniform if they have one.
Hope that helps

And yes - your pc should work in NZ.

Our school is about the same as Carol's for fees. Uniform cost us around $400, that was for 3 pairs of shorts, 3 polo shirts, 2 sets of pe kit and a school jacket. Shoes are around $50.

Shoes are around $50.
Until they suddenly start wearing adult sizes.....it crept us on us unawares!

It was how quickly they grew out of the $50 shorts that got us! I swear to God lewis has grown 6 inches in 3 months! His shorts used to be just on his knee and now they're mid-thigh!

Our boys school charge approx the same fees as above .... no school uniform though so we save on that.
I actually approve of paying for the school stationary - at least you know what you are paying is actually being spent on the books as we get 12 month supply of text books, pens, pencil, rulers etc etc all wrapped up in a nice tidy box.
Hey there you go ...... I made a positive comment in an education thread, I must be going soft in my old age.

Yup, deffo going soft!
It is a bit of a shock when you consider you don't pay for your school books here (well, not to the school), but hey, when in Rome....
And yes, it is as you say, at least you see what you paying for.

If it's a Catholic school you'll pay a fee to the Catholic School Board. I think this varies from school to school and ours is $280 a year at the moment for primary. Unfortunately no reduction when you eventually have three kids going :( Some of the secondary schools here are $800 a year.
Then school uniform, stationery costs and another fee for trips out. It's the cost of the school uniform that got me, so far $150-200 for winter and summer uniform, hoping to pass it some of it down when he's finished with it/
