Hi there - hope I can get some advice from you friendly folks :roll bit baffled by NZimmigration

After going to manchester expo we got some excellent feedback about emmigating to NX. We had been a bit unsure is we could do it as we don't have enough points. However my hubbie is a self-employed builder/joiner - with no qualifications - and everyone said he'd pick up a job no problem and just to get over there as they are desperate in the construction industry.

But - how exactly do we do this - do we come on a temp. work visa or work to residence or just come as tourists and then apply when over there when he gets a job (but apply for which visa?) and then what about when that visa runs out? Plus - do we need a visa each or does it apply for family (we are married and have 3 school age kids)

We are over for 3 weeks next March and have some contacts for him to speak to then - it would be great if he could get some interviews as we are prepared to sell up as soon as we get back and move asap. (How many companies would be prepared to wait a few months for him to arrive back in NZ?)

Sorry for all questions but I'm struggling to piece together all info here.

It is my understanding you cannot get a temp. work visa or work to residence without a job. If you're 30 or under, you can enter in with a working holiday visa, but with 3 kids you're probably older than 30....in which case IMHO your best bet is to go on a tourist visa for up to a year....find a job, get a work permit which will get you the right to work as well as allow your family to enter. With police and medical you can get one for 24-30 months. Then you can apply for PR with more points that you'd have if you just stayed home and applied.

I can't give you a definitive answer but I would recommend emailing NZIS with a brief description of your situation. I did that and got fast, helpful advice.

Good luck!
