I just finished taking my children "trick or treating" for Halloween this year. It was very cute and very cold...20 F...11 F with wind chill. Their little hands were like popsicles!
How do the Kiwis celebrate this holiday? I've heard that it isn't that big of a deal. Is this true? Do you dress up in costumes? Do you Trick or Treat?

I'm not a big fan of it so no - we dont bother.
And we had sweets to give out when kids' knocked but none came - so we've just finished them ourselves!
So - no - I don't think it's such a big deal here....
Maybe elsewhere but not where we are.

There was a $200 reward for best costume at a bar/restaurant called The Establishment in Wellington. And Capital E (http://www.capitale.org.nz/) had an event for kids. Oddly the local Baptist church in Waikanae had a "Fear Factor" night on Halloween, but I don't know what it involved. (The sign did say something like "Bring your guts of steel!" :uhoh)
As for Trick or Treating, check out this thread (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?p=97582#post97582) currently running on another part of the forum.
