:uhoh

Just when everything was going ok... got my medical results back today, managed to get off work early to pick them up from the sorting office.

My liver results came back abnormal (Not too surprised to be honest after years of abuse ;)

The doc said they were only slightly elavated and if anyone knows how this will be seen by the NZIS I would be grateful for the advice.

Male Age 41 BMI 35 and not a regular drinker...

Results were: Haematology results:

one dodgy result: MCHC 35.1 (Normal range 30-35) What the hell is MCHC?

AST result 45 (Normal Range 0-37)
ALT result 116 (Normal Range 10-50)

Any advice please

MCHC is an abbreviation for mean cell hemoglobin concentration, which is the average concentration of hemoglobin in a given volume of blood. The MCHC is a calculated value derived from the measurement of hemoglobin and the hematocrit. (The hemoglobin value is the amount of hemoglobin in a volume of blood while the hematocrit is the ratio of the volume of red cells to the volume of whole blood.) The normal range for the MCHC is 32 - 36%. The MCHC is a standard part of the complete blood count.

My Liver results were also slightly abnormal and the Immigration doctor requested an explanation from my own GP. They seem pretty strict on these things. However, I think there is only likely to be a problem if there is an underlying problem likely to be a burden on the NZ health service. My own GP said that LFT results can often be elevated for no apparent reason.

Thanks for the responses,

I'm going to check again in a couple of months and get it re-checked to compare. I'm not in a rush as I'm not due to start my job until June next year... I'll have to abstain from the beer for a few months...

Probably not a bad idea!!

Thanks once again

There must be something in the air at the moment - I had a LFT test and they came back at 300 and something! Normal is 30!! eeek! :| Anyway, stayed off the drink for 2 weeks and had second lot of tests last week and the levels were back down to 60 so getting better. Doc thinks it could be something viral and asked if I ever had glandular fever in the past - I used to get tonsilitis a lot when I was younger so she thinks it may be related to something like this. Maybe you could mention this at your next appointment?

Also, my Dad had some liver results back last week (he's in the UK) and his reults were 'elevated' too so I really think there's something in the air right now :)

Don't worry too much - I'm sure it will all sort itself out soon. The power of the mind and body is huge :)

Hi, There is no worry. I was at the same boat. You might be asked to do ore liver tests, but after 2 month you will smile. visit this:

try not to worry, I gave up booze for a few months and lost some weight, then had a specialist examine me and write a report that all was well. I understand that it is worrying and frustrating, but we are now living in Christchurch with Resi visas. Its is just a pain in the backside having to jump through the hoops.

Yes, Hubby has similar results - could be from working in Indonesia, and exposure to malaria. His paperwork passed without question. Elevated enzymes are often associated with too much fat in diet as well as alcohol consumption [not always a factor]. Try grape seed oil, milk thistle extract and lots of water!

Hi there
My husband had the same issue - weeks of farewell parties prior to our departure - just layoff the booze for a couple of months otherwise expect 2 - 4 week delays in your workpermit being approved. They send any abnormalities to a doctor in wellington - goes on a roundabout checking and comes back to you for a retest - that can take a long time. Best to play it safe - my buddy had to get his in a hurry so he drank some glucose based energy drinks - apparently it will steady out the result. But if you lay off it for a while - approximately 3months(thats what the doctor said to my husband) it should be fine. Gd luck.

My worst fears realised; my GGT came back from the lab at 74 !!! The doc reckons the range is 9 - 40.
All the other results are normal (no desease or damage) so the doc reckons it has to be too much alcohol in the past; it has apparently made my liver hypersensive to ANY amount of alcohol and although I drink normally now, I have done the damage. Although we are going to go ahead and submit the report, I will undoubtedly have questions to answer and probably more tests to go through. This could take some time!!

After submitting my ITA, my case officer called to say everything was fine except for the liver results.

She asked me to get another set of results done, and if they are normal then I can expect a quick decision!!

I've been of the beer for about two and a half months now and my re-test is Thursday morning. I'll have to wait till after Christmas for the results.

Thursday night I'm off to my mates to get 'socially relaxed'!! :nice1

Good luck with your application.
