The crime here in South Africa is getting closer and closer to home. We decided to investigate our options for moving out of South Africa a few weeks ago. This was after two gunpoint robberies in short succession in our street and 3 close friends/colleagues being hijacked. Last Friday my little sister in law was visiting friends and they were robbed while she was there – fortunately no-one was injured.

I am getting anxious about the political climate in the country and am uncertain where that is going to lead. Government is enforcing Black Empowerment rules and I feel it is like apartheid in reverse. I currently employ 2 Indians and 3 Africans but government still insists that I become BEE complaint and that costs a lot of money.

My business has been running successfully for the past 6 years and I have this month for the first time broken even. My departure will not too negatively affect the business and the staff I currently employ can run it with remote assistance from time to time. It will however not be able to support me on foreign soil – I will need gainful employment to pursue opportunities abroad.

My age is also counting against me – I turn 33 in January and I cannot let that linger too long as options are already diminishing for relocating to other countries.

Why New Zealand? We are exploring options in both New Zealand and Australia. Continental vs. Island living? I have always wanted a lakeside abode with my aircriaft, on floats, parked next to the dock. Currently I fly a Microlight Trike (weight shift) and I am on the verge of doing my instructor rating. In South Africa you cannot charge for flipping unless you are at least an instructor with 200 total hours flown – Grade C. Thus me leaning towards New Zealand.

Being in IT a decent Internet connection is of the utmost importance to both of us. Australia has the better connections in the larger cities from what my Internet research has shown.

My other half is also in IT (as you might have gathered) - a specialist in .NET development, SQL, C#. He frequently contracts out on behalf of Microsoft to large clients.

My mother in law is currently 43 and holds a Pre-primary Higher Educational Diploma from the College of Education of South Africa and an Advanced Pre-Primary Educational Diploma from the Pretoria College of Education. She has 16 years teaching experience. She has also been dabbling in real estate the past 4 years.

The sister in law is finishing final year of school this year and is keen to Au Pair. I suggested she goes where we plan to relocate to ;)

Timing – If I could have my way I would be out of here tomorrow – but logistically I know it is impossible. Houses, cars, pets, debt etc that needs to be taken care of.

We have been researching like mad (or at least I have :laugh ), we have completed our EOI online, not submitted yet, my OH has sent his electrician qualifications to be assessed. Next step to send my teaching quals to be assessed (waiting for transcript to be sent from one of the Uni's I attended) and gain teacher and electrician registration. Then the hard work really begins

Just a thought as far as NZ vs Aus is concerned.

I would suggest you seriously consider what type of weather you like in considering NZ and Aus. From a South African standpoint, NZ has terrible weather. It is supposed to be summer already, and we have still not gotten into the 20s yet (or, if you are really lucky, 21). The sun is also pretty weak (you stand around all day in the sun, you will not be red, you will simply be sore the next day). And I don't know where you live, but if you like to swim in the sea, it is comparable to Cape Town water temps.

We moved to NZ because it was the only viable option for us, and don't get me wrong, I will be eternally grateful to it for getting us out of South Africa, but if I had a choice in the matter, it would have been Aus (my brother moved to Sydney a couple of months back, and he cannot stop gushing about it).

Hi Dark Helmet

Your mother-in-law must have started teaching at a young age! And I hope your husband is a lot younger than you...

But seriously, have you thought about a short trip to have a look (and sniff) at New Zealand and Australia? I think you would get a lot more information about professional and personal opportunities.

Good luck with your decisions!

Well, coming from SA I am sick and tired of sunshine and heat. That is one reason I dont want to go to Oz. I was in Sydney on New Years Day and it was 45C. Far too hot. Auckland in December was early 20s and wet. Loved it.

Thanks for the advise all round.

We are planning a trip out end of Feb, 1 week NZ, 1 week Oz to go for a look see.

We now need help and direction. Life here is so by the minute finding direction is hard.

New Zealand is our destination of choice. Doing it all by ourselves is a bit hard at present due to work commitments.

LSD is planned for April, would like to get in touch with some agencies that people have worked with. I have contacted local removal agents for relocation quotes.

As we understand having solid job offers are an imperative and we are planning our LSD to accomodate interviews around it.

We fear we have to work through an agency due to time constraints and other matters.

Please pm me if you have had good or bad experiences with agencies and if you could provide recommendations.

We would like to visit over Easter (minimal work disruption) and would like to meet with people in NZ for some pointers and a stroll around the local shops to get a feel of our intended new home and maybe a job interview or two.

As I understand we do not need a Visa to visit NZ from South Africa if we do not intend to stay longer than 3 months. Is this correct?

The intention is to visit for 2 weeks and make the most of it. We are skipping Oz. NZ recognises civil unions which were legalised in ZA today. This was the deciding factor for our relocation to NZ.
