Hi,

We just settled in Nelson after spending many, many hours trying to find a decent furnished home in the area for rent on a short term basis. Given our struggles, we are considering buying a few nice houses in the area and renting them out specifically to immigrants who are coming over. These immigrants, like us, may want a nice place for a few months while they look for a house, wait for their their container or seek a longer term rental. Any feedback on a need for this type of housing? I know we had a heck of time finding a place, but maybe it is just because it is Nelson?

If you would be seeking a place,( hypothetically) how big would you want it to be?

Thanks for your feedback,

Wendy

Maybe it's a little more widespread because we're in a similar situation here in Orewa. We affectionately call our temporary 'home' the Flea Pit, not because of infestations but because the furnishings are so shabby. The apartment is only a few years old and architecturally very nice (apart from LBS), it's just the furnishings....I have no idea what the usual standard of tenant is like but beginnning to guess that they tend to have no pride or respect.

We're moving in 2 weeks to an unfurnished place so we can get our container out. We hoped to buy instead of going for a longer term rental but that's another story again :(

Wendy,

just hypotheticall...

We're a couple so we'd want a one or two bedrooms, with a dining area where we could have friends around. 45-50 square metres would be ok, when I think about some of the furnished studio flats I've stayed in (at hotels). I'd want a decent stereo!

Would you service the flat? The cleaner could keep an eye on the place and check if things were being damaged or going missing...

In NZ it is quite easy to get a flat. Landlords don't ask for big deposits, evidence of income or letters of recommendation. You could increase your comfort level by asking for these from prospective tenants.
