Sorry, have to say it's Lindauer for me (or as Helen would call it, pommaine). By the way Woolies have got a special on Montana wine for around $8 - normally about $15 - just doing my caring and sharing thing.

Pinot Gris for me!! :cheers
Definately the Pinot Gris .... all the others seem to be 'one eyed' wines.
(In other words, as soon as it's in your mouth one eye slams shut).
Anybody got any suggestions for wines at the sweeter end of the scale .... so far my all time NZ favourite is Montana Gewurtztraminer.

That doesn't matter ...... I'm not into quaffing something akin to 12 volt battery acid so any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks for the info hon .... we'll get a few bottle of this in for when we manage another get together (although it won't be until end of Jan now as we're off on our hols soon ........ yay !!!!!).

Right, now we're cooking! - my fave subject (well on a par with shopping anyway!)
If anyone likes dessert wine then I'd recommend Selaks Ice Wine - yum! In Germany they wait until the vines have frozen & go out in the middle of the night to pick the frozen grapes, here they pick them as usual & then freeze them - well its easier & cheaper isn't it?! Makes for a v. cheap v. good dessert wine!
For me its Sav all the way, although Jod & I have a soft spot for Jacobs Creek Pink Fizz (OK not NZ wine & not very classy but it goes down well & can usually be found for around $8 a bottle!! & is the only JC wine I'll touch) & anything Lindauer except that strawberry one.
If you're into your Savs but budget is tight Rueben Hall is a v. nice tasting one & is on at $5.99!!!! a bottle at the mo in Pak n' Save - is usually around the $10 mark (needless to say Mr SarahW has been & stocked the wine fridge for the summer!!)
My closest friends in the UK are in the wine business, he's a merchant & she works for a v.v. nice French champers co & he gives me recommendations every time we speak... if you like fizzes he's recommended Kim Crawford Rory Brut (named for one of Kim's kids), or Pelourus by Cloudy Bay... now, we just need the weather to sit out on the deck & sip away!!

I say try homemade mead in place of a dessert wine! :D

I love NZ wines. At the moment I'm a big fan of CJ Pask Merlot and a wonderful Craggy Range Pinot. Both very easy drinking and not too heavy on the pocket (I do buy by the case though).
Not a big fan of bubbles, although Liquorland have just had Verve on offer for $45 a bottle, which meant my wallet took a bit of a bashing.
I like Sauvignon Blanc too, especially now the weather is getting better. I'm looking forward to a nice glass of Oyster Bay when I finish work tonight.

That is so funny. Are you a big dessert person, as well?
The reason I ask is that I'm just the opposite. We took a week-long wine tour in Paris, Champagne and the Loire Valley (http://web.archive.org/web/20041027070648/www.wine-tours-france.com/ParisChampLoire2004.pdf) in 2004. We tasted about 60 different wines during the week (and I never thought I'd spit out good wine after a taste, but by the end of the week I was doing it -- talk about wine overload!!!), and for 8 months after that back at home, we tried a tonne of different wines, mostly French, but I never went really crazy for any particular kind. Then in June 2005 we visited New Zealand, and I absolutely fell for the Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs (I had never cared for SB before). I'll have an occasional Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, or Cab Sauv/Merlot/Syrah/Shiraz blend, but NZ Sauv Blancs have won my heart. I love that grapefruit/passionfruit/mango/citrus blend.
But then, one bite of a really sweet dessert is about all I can take, and I'd rather have a double-sized spicy or salty main dish with no dessert, than one of each.

No, Stevie - not a fount of knowledge - just a very mis-spent few years drinking late into the night - ooh they were the days!! ;)
Ooh I'll have to make another phonecall to him & get some new suggestions - especially as my hubby gets a Moore Wilsons voucher from work as his Xmas pressie!! (We don't get past the alcohol section with it usually!!) Might phone my wine guru in the morning since I haven't spoken to them for a long while!
Omaka Springs wine is v. good - it was something that his wife's Champers co used to import from NZ (I think I remember them selling it on to M&S (may be wrong there) but I can tell you - I've drunk a LOT of it!! :) - certainly give them a go if you get the chance!!

Our current favourite is from Cooper's Creek - "Cat's Pee on a Gooseberry Bush" Sauvignon Blanc. Humourous name - excellent wine. Friends and family are always amused when we introduce them to it.

We bought a bottle and brought it home, but we haven't opened it yet. (bought just for the name :o ) I should open it this Turkey day, and let the friends and fam in on it. :) (In case it's gross, so everyone suffers! :laugh )
