I just wanted to spread the word about a great website that started in the U.S. and is spreading like wildfire. It is a FREE site to list just about anything for sale and also to promote a variety of social and networking activities.

There is a Craigslist site for New Zealand but it is not well utilized at this point. The growth of this site in the States was via word of mouth and it has now gotten so huge that it is threatening the newspaper's paid classies. I would love to see it grow in NZ so we can all benefit . Just wanted to let everyone know, and with the hope that people will spread the word. Check it out- they may also have a more established U.K version, I haven't looked. I use it to rent all our properties in the States, sell our rental homes, buy all sorts of stuff and sell any thing we don't need. All free of charge! I love it.

Cheers,

Wendy

Don't try .co.uk unless you're looking for an adult site - oops!

Try this http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/gb for the UK site - just had a quick look and not much appears to be happening ... yet.

The url for the site is craigslist.com, click on your country of interest- ( right hand side of page) It is also a good site if you are planning a holiday in the States- with vacation rentals listed etc. This company has a great history. It was started by a computer geek, Craig, and spread by word of mouth only. He makes so much money on the paid advertising for job ads in California that he decided to keep the rest of the site free. Ebay has tried to buy him and he has refused. He says he loves giving people a free option for advertising their stuff. Has become a major threat for the classifieds, online and otherwise. Would love to see trademe aka Fairfax given a run for their money here! Spread the word and who knows?

I think the success of Craigslist depends on where you live and how active the community is in using that sort of tool. Right now, in Wellington anyway, TradeMe seems to have everyone's attention (and people don't seem to mind paying for it). Have you seen gumtree? It's basically the same thing as Craigslist. I don't see much activity on there for where I live (Welly). But I too hope something like Craigslist will pick up down here like in the States. I sold/bought many things in C-list back when I was living in America.

so i looked at jobs in the cambridge uk version (my local one i assume). the accounting and finance page has one job - a stock broker trainee in fort lauderdale, florida. the business and management pages also has one job - an obvious scam "I can offer you a direct selling opportunity that will allow you to be able to control your destiny by the power and freedom of Residual Income"

I can't see it overcoming the power of ebay just yet....

Nice idea though

Yeah some of the regions have definitely not taken off like that have in other places. If you're curious about the power of Craigslist (though it may not pertain to you and your specific location) have a look at any of the major cities in the States, namely San Francisco, where it originated.

I love craigslist! You can buy/sell, barter, or find/give away free stuff. I'm using it a lot right now to consolidate for the big move and put a little cash away for the moving costs! I checked out the NZ craigslist last Feb; mostly people trying to hook up roadtrips/rides, but it's a start. :)
