Is Papanui considered a desirable area for families or in general? Any thoughts or feedback on this area? How far is it to downtown CC?

I don`t know much about Papanui itself, but one of my friends who lives there says it is ok. Actually, when I looked at the map, I couldn`t decide where Papanui starts. My friend lives on the border of Merivale/Papanui and it is a quiet nice area. Merivale seems rather upmarket.
It is not far from the centre of town at all, but traffic can build up on Papanui rd around 3 pm because of the schools. Otherwise, rather smooth. (took me 5 minutes to go from Bealey av to the near end of Papanui rd at 10 am).
Not much help, I realise, but we rarely go to that part of town.
