Thought i ought to post a little message about us...

I'm Mike, lil' brother of Moorf, and my OH Mia and my two girls Ellie and Caitlin (and Frosty the dog).

After visiting NZ for the whole of December last year, we were sold on the idea of moving out and leaving the UK. Even though we were 'only' there for a month, the arrival back at Heathrow was a real shock, we had forgot in that short space of time just how over-bearing and crowded the UK is! (not to mention how rude people are, we had got used to chatting to the checkout girl or striking up a conversation with the guy infront and behind in the que!) We've always wanted to return the NZ, but in the last few weeks especially, that feeling has gotten more intense and we're really pining to get out there, but there are a few family ties here in the UK which prevent an immediate move, but thats a long story.

So, anyways, seeing as a move is on the books, i thought I'd register so I can leech as much info as poss out of you lot as I have a lot of questions, many which have probably been asked before - but I DO use the search so excuse me if a post a dupe :) Many of my questions relate to the day-to-day mundane stuff like bills and cost of living/services etc.

Think thats enough about us for now, i'm sure i'll be hovering around a lot and get you know some of you - in fact, i think i've met some of you out there at a doo Helen hosted at her place. I'm afraid names i'm not good at but a big HELLO from us and the kids if you are reading this! My kids still want a trampoline to play cracked eggs on lol

Hi Mike and welcome to the forum.
We have never been to NZ and wer'e pining to get over there.I know what you mean about people being so rude in UK. We have had dealings with several people in NZ by email or phone and so far they have all been wonderful. They treat you as if they have known you for years and one of these was a woman from inland revenue. In the uk you get the feeling that they think you are inferior to them or maybe thats just me being silly.Well one thing I would like to know. Are you going to be as avid a poster as your sister? She is an asset to this forum.

Kindest regards

Dave and Caroline

Welcome to the forum Mike and family. I've found it invaluable and i'm sure you will too. Whereabouts in NZ will you aim for, Canterbury perhaps?

Welcome to the forum. I am sure you will find a lot of your questions answered on this forum . Its been great for us.

I understand how you feel about the Uk and I think more and more people are moving abroad. We loved NZ when we were there 3 years ago and have been looking into moving out ever since. And now 'application approved in principal' we are on away.

Good luck with the planning.

thanks for the warm welcome :)

We have no specific area, except for the fact we liked the Canturbury area in general. As you know my sis is in this area, my parents appear to favour the Queenstown area and it looks certain they will retire out there soon, so we'd like to be within driving distance of both. I will need to look for work (I'm in IT, and my OH is currently a Civil Servant, but also a fully qualified and practising ICHT Holistic Reflexologist), so unless I can continue working from home like I do now, I'd need to be near Christchurch.

I've been scouring sites such as Baileys and Harcourts for weeks and theres a fair few I like the look of, and from what i can remember, in nice area's too. We need to factor in schooling locations for the kids - Darfield appears to have a very good reputation, and we also liked the town so you never know, i might end up walking distance from sis - that'll please her lol. She moved to the other side of the world to get away from her annoying lil' bruv hehehe. Sweeeeet :)

Welcome to the forum.

Hey - as for supermarket queues ...... a year and a half down the line having the checkout chick ask 'how's your day been' with as much monotone sincerity as a dead fish I've got to the stage where I wish they'd just scan, pack and keep schtum !!! But hey, as for all your other hopes and dreams about moving to NZ I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed. Good luck, hope you don't have to wait too long before getting here.

I believe it's a legal requirement of your PR that you can't live within 1.5 hours of immediate family ..... :D

This was exactly our experience, the lady was so friendly and dare I say it .....helpful. I wonder if we got the same woman!

Hi Moorf Jnr, I must say your name doesn't make you sound old enough to have children!

Cheers

Tia

PS StevieD has your avatar really been removed due to complaints, or is it a joke avatar? As I can't remember what you had before, I'm not sure which is the case!

A BIG welcome from all of us too!
The forum has been great, and now we can look back at all those trying to make the journey over here, which we did 3 months ago.

Welcome Mike & Co
My hubby and I are also pinning to move to NZ as soon as poss but not sure if and when. Hubby wants us to have 2 week hol there first but the cost is around £4000 for both of us, I would just pack up and go if we especially had a job offer. Hoping to go to the Expo next March 07 to have a chat with a few NZ employers. I tried the points system and only looking around 110 at the moment.
hope all goes well
